I'm trying to remove the steering box in my '74 Valiant, and can't get the steering column out of the steering box. How is it attached to the box? I removed the roll pin but still can't get the shaft to slide out. I also tried removing the retaining clip from the other side of the collar, but that isn't the answer either... Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Or is the shaft just stuck real good? I've tried a prybar and some penetrating oil but that didn't work. I don't want to pry real hard just in case I haven't really removed whatever is attaching the shaft to the box.

just removed the power steering box from my dart last week and put a manual box in.i just removed the roll pin and used a rubber malet to hit the coupler. i think the rubber boot on top gets imbeded with rust making it hard to slide up.plus the splines might have alittle rust.its been there along time. don't forget to use the pitman arm puller my .02 good luck.... andy

Question

If you can't get the pot coupler to slide off the splines of the box, you can take off the tin retainer at the top of the coupler, and if you look real close you will see a very small pin in one side of the pot coupler. (It looks like a small carpet tack) Pull it out and you can pull all the guts out of the pot coupler and get the box off.

The reason I am doing this is because I am swapping manual steering in for my power steering; do I also have to switch steering columns? If so, taking the shaft out is a moot point. Luckily both cars are '74 Valiants so the steering columns should be interchangeable.
