On my car right now i have power steering that uses a bottle(the BIG one) of fluid a week. I was wondering if a fast ratio manual steering setup ( does anyone make such a thing??) would be as easy to turn or perform as good as standard power steering. And yes for people that saw my dashpad post , i am trying to make my car a stripper. I know i would have to get a new steering column but that wont be a problem because my uncle wants to change his manual steering challenger to power. Another reason i would like fast ratio manual steering is to clean up the engine compartment and to get some drag off the engine.
Thanks for any help. |

I saw on Hot Rod TV a rack & pinion setup that is virtually a bolt-on, but I don't remember any particulars. Anybody else remember this? It looked like a really cool setup...

70 Challenger, before you go to all the trouble of swapping steering columns, give Steer & Gear a call at 614-231-4064 or 1-800-253-4327.They make an adapter for about $100.00 that enables you to use your current power steering column with a simple bolt on piece to a manual steering box. I did this over the winter and it worked great. Also they have the fast rate steering boxes you are looking for.

Thanks MGM , thats just what i was looking for. But would it still take the strength of a gorilla to turn at low speeds even with a fast ratio?
Thanks |

If you go with manual steering I would not get a steering box that is faster than the factory put on. I know a few people who thought it would be cool to have a fast ratio but when they put one in they were crying about the high effort at low speeds. Fast ratios are for road racing where you are busy going around many corners. It is easy to oversteer a fast box and end up with a tree in your grill. As far as the adapters when I was looking around for one I chose the Firm Feel one over the Steer and Gear one but then it was only $75 and now it is $125. Inflation hit have I guess. Good Luck.

If you have some relatively narrow front runner type tires the manual steering does not require nearly as much effort as it will if you have some fat low profile rubber.
Something unrelated though, is if this car is a pretty straight true RT/SE, you might want to think twice about turning it into a stripper. (?) Sell it, find a 318 car, and turn it into a street racer. This is what I am doing. |
