I have a 500" mill with the Indy 440-1 heads. Probably in the HP area you're interested in. I have the Be Cool radiator, and as a result there isn't room for the clutch fan. I ran a spal pusher fan and it wasn't enough to keep it cool in the TX Summer. Had to put in a flex fan too. That was enough. Water wetter helped a lot too. My car doesn't quite run 10s though (heavy B-body), at least not yet.
Good luck, Molloy |

I've was thinking of doing the same thing on my 440 but haven't been able to find a electric fan capable of keeping a 500 plus horse motor cool on the street.I'm also running the mp aluminum pump but i'm running a clutch fan.I do know a fan shrowd is a must on the street, haven't fired it up yet, should be in the next two weeks or so.Only time will tell if this combo will work or not.

Mopardude-I'm also trying to cool a 440 in the 500hp range.(I posted this but did'nt get a response-so here goes agin) Also have BeCool, MP hous.and Milodon pump/hi-vol thermo. Barely room for my MP viscous fan(about 1/2" to spare) in E-body. Dont have shroud tho, so maybe thats the problem. It wants to run around 190' cruising on an 80 degree day and idle over 200'-especially if I've been gettin' on it!
72 Challenger 440B1-BS850demondp ------------------ Molloy--I found some Red Line WaterWetter. I'll try that and reduce anti-freeze to 20%. [This message has been edited by montrose ram (edited July 04, 2000).] [This message has been edited by montrose ram (edited July 05, 2000).] |

I dont run a high HP motor as you do, but I was having a cooling problem like you. 69 Coronet 383, stock 3 core rad)When I bought the car it was raced 1/8 mi and only had a flex fan. Thus, temps were never that high. I put it on the street and was overheating like a bear.
First, I flushed and changed the t-stat to 160 and added a 16" elec. fan - did nothing Second, replaced radiator- did nothing third, rid the fan, replaced with MP Viscus fan package and added shroud from year one= cool as ice. never goes 2 notches above 180 and on a 70 deg. night, steady at 160. COULDNT BELIEVE IT !!!CANT BE HAPPIER!! |

Did you use the Be Cool radiator specific for your car or the general purpose one. I expect to be doing this upgrade in the spring as I'm just starting to rebuild the 440 for my Challenger. |

I'm running a warmed up Indy head 383 in my DeSoto, probably around 450HP and I'm using Flex-A-Lite's #210 dual electric puller fan with a BeCool radiator. The radiator is just the one in the Summit catalog for a B body, and it fit the 'sota just fine. However I only had about 3" clearance between the rad and my pulleys. I tried 2 different Spal fans and both were too thick. The Flex-A-Lite was the only one that was thin enough. (If you run a puller, you don't have to run a mech fan, if you run a pusher you do because they're not as efficient.) I should mention that I had to clearance (actually remove!) the corners of the fan to clear the water outlet and trans cooler fittings, but it still works like a champ and stays around 190 degrees with a 180 degree thermostat. However, it is an amp hog and combined with my BG fuel pump, ignition, etc... at idle my stock alternator's 30 amps aren't enough to keep the battery charged. I'm told the fan draws close to 20 amps. So now i'm converting over to a Powermaster alternator that puts out 50 amps at idle and 75 amps at speed, this should make for better cruising!

ADuetto- I have the E-body specific BeCool radiator. From what shark724 posted, I think I really need to get a shroud! BeCool says you can modify a stock shroud to fit. I plan to talk with Yr One and get one(car did'nt have one when I bought it)or fabricate something that will work if I have to. Good luck with your Challenger!

I haven't heard anything good on electric fans, a couple of cheby guys said they were worse, but I run a old 3 core, flex fan and a shroud with no problems. 500+ hp
