I have some sloppy steering happening with my Valiant. I checked the gearbox and it is tight. The play is actually where the steering column meets the steering box. The linkage is about 4" above the box.

Does anyone know an easy fix for this or what causes it? I was told by someone that I need a new steering box but I dont seem to think so.

Sounds like your coupler is sloppy. It's the metal box that hooks the steering column shaft to the steering box input shaft. Rebuilt kits are available from the dealer, have them look up an 80's Diplomat.

you might want to check the small parts inside of the steering colom coupler yoke. there are two pads (shoes) and a sheet metal type spring inside. the shoes can and will wear.... they can be replaced. also there is a pin that goes through the end of the colom that the shoes locate on , it will also wear BUT I dont think that it is replacable....by replacing the pads (shoes) you should get rid of most of your problem.

Just replaced the same thing on my '87 Ramcharger. The local Dodge dealer had the whole rebuilt kit for the coupler, shoes, pins dust seal etc. for under $5.00
