Just bought a new 3.91 ring and pinion from Richmond for my 8 3/4 posi and reading through the instructions they recommend their 75W140 and state that NO OTHER lubricant should be used. Everything I've ever read or heard says that a 75W90 from like RedLine or somebody will work fine. Are they just trying to sell me gear oil? or is there really a difference? or are they just trying to tell me that this gearset is going to be REALLY noisy???

What lubricant do you recommend???

Thanks in advance..

The only difference I can see is that the 75/140 will remain thicker than the 75/90 at high temperatures. If their gears run hotter than normal gears for some reason then this would be an advantage. Of course hotter means there is more friction, which is always bad; if their gears run so much hotter then they shouldn't be selling them in the first place. Synthetic 75/90 should be just as good as 75/140 under "normal" temperatures, i.e. you will see no benefit from the increased viscosity rating. If that's all the diference between their oil and the Redline then go with whatever costs less. I'd call them up and ask them to explain more than just saying "use it". Who knows, maybe there's a very interesting explanation!

Exclamation Richmond Gears

If you don't use their recomended gear weight oil, AND you do have noise issues, your claim will be bounced because you didn't use what they say. The 3.91 will make a little more heat than a 3.23 or a 2 series gear. What will it hurt using the heavier gear oil?

Better to have and not need, than to need and not have
