HAVE 1970 DUSTER 340. TRANS (727) WAS REBUILT 8 MONTHS AGO. HAD 3000 STALL AND SHIFT KIT (TRANS GO) PUT IN. SINCE THEN LOST REVERSE, PISTON BROKE, SECOND TIME THE TRANS WOULD SHIFT INTO SECOND AND LOCK UP, PISTON BROKE, NOW HAVE NO REVERSE AGAIN. LESS THAN 500 MILES ON TRANS. SHOP SAYS ITS "ABUSE" I SAY NO WAY. ANY REASON FOR HAVING THESE PROBLEMS? THOUGHT 727S WERE PRETTY TOUGH. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED

When you say "piston broke" what exactly are you saying. Piston seals, rings or Piston itself is broke?

I read somewhere that when you put the trans back together. the parking or reverse lever is a pain to put in.I can't remember. I have this in a mag someplace.Something was done wrong bye you.
I'll stand for the torqueflite, I've given them some real abuse in the past and there tuff. Have even seen them in a couple of chevy's. Don't know why but they must know somthing i guess. |

Some shift kits make mods to the rear (low/reverse) servo piston that makes them IMO unreliable. Two mods come to mind. 1.) They replace the servo spring with a much stiffer one - that sometimes causes the spring retainer to blow past the snap ring - especially if the rear band is not adjusted properly. (pow - no reverse) 2.) They put a shim between the piston and the piston rod - disabling the cushion effect of the smaller internal spring. Again - this can cause the piston to blow past its retainer. Either of these mods can reduce the reliability of the rear servo. You would still have 1st but rev will be missing if the servo fails.
So - what damage did you see - or are you relying on what the shop told you (perhaps to cover their butt!!) These mods are not necessary in a 727 - they are like snake oil (who needs to oil snakes?) If you did not see it in person then you need to have them show you the damaged parts. I have never seen a rear servo fail like this (did a lot of 727s) except when the rear servo spring retainer blows past the snap ring. |

I've heard that when installing a high powered shift kit, it is a good idea to replace the low/reverse piston, because the stock piston can't always handle the pressures a shift kit can put on it. A&A makes an aluminum piston to fix this.
