I want to put a Mopar Performance crate 360/380hp in my 1996 Ram 1500. Both the fuel injection and transmission on my current motor are computer controlled. The Performace 360 is set up for a carburator. Can I put my fuel injection system on the Mopar Performance 360? If not, is there an aftermarket computer chip that will work with my automatic transmission w/ overdrive and the new set up with a carburator? I don't want to have to change or modify the transmission.
BTW, this is in a 1996 Ram 1500 extended cab with a 318 and automatic/overdrive. Bottom line:I want to replace my 318 with something in the 325 to 400 hp range. If you have any other suggestions, please share them. Thanks in advance, Jeff |

It would be cheaper to start with a Magnum short block and put your 318 stuff on it. Hughes and others make nice camshafts for Magnum motors.
FYI, the front end of the crate motors is different. The camshafts don't interchange. If you want to keep the stock wp and accessories, you will have to get a different camshaft than the one in the 380. Plus, the computer would have one heck of a time trying to control it. My advice: forget the crate motor. Get a 360 short block and talk to some people who build stuff for the magnums. ------------------ 68 Cuda, twisties style http://members.xoom.com/magnumcuda/sprfish.htm 96 Club Cab 4x4, Cummins 5spd |

You can't do that, for more than one reason. First, right , the stock injector system will not be able to control or provide enough fuel for the crate motor. Maybe more importantly, most states have emission control laws that the crate will NEVER pass. The setup could cost you 10 grand to do right (including a new injector system and computer tuning). Your best bet would be an aftermarket tuner installation of a blower. For about 4 grand( the cost of a crate motor) you could have a new cam, polished heads, and a blower, and get into the 300 hp range. It would make more torque than the crate motor down low where your truck needs it , too.

Your best bet would be to find a low milage 360 out of a '97 or newer truck.... and then:
Call hughes and get a cam suggestion based on what you want to do. They can also direct you in the head work as needed. Get Huhges' ported EFI manifold $450.00 with core. Get thier 915 cfm throttle body Ask them about controllers too Larger volume injectors injectors All this can be pieced from different mfg.'s, but for the short story, call Hughes and they can help. check it out.... www.hughesengines.com Oh, and you'll have to make considerations for stall speed too. As in, a new converter if you want to realize the new power. [This message has been edited by MopART (edited September 02, 2000).] |
