J heads (to the best of my understanding) X heads with smaller valves. You can put the X head valve sizes in the J heads. Of course you just can't slap the valves in, you have to get the seats hogged out, and while your at it get a 3 angle valve job done, and the seats hardned.

The "J" heads have 1.88 intake, 1.60 exhaust valves. They are identical to the "X" heads except the x head comes with 2.02 intake valve. I haven't priced them in awhile but I think you can pick them up for under $150

As far as the valve size goes.....9 out of 10 of the J's had the smaller valves. The first year they came out they came with the 2.02's from the factory and were equal with the X's. Then Uncle Sam stuck his face into the pie and in went the 1.88's . Like the others said, These probably should be gone thru and you can do what you want with them to get very good performance. They may be older but are a good iron head.

Cool

J heads were used on 340's in mid '70 and '71 and used 2.02 valves. The 72 and later (and all 360) had 1.88's. I found a set of '72 J heads in a junkyard near Chicago last year and picked them up for $100. I also saw a guy advertising a complete '72 360 for $200 recently. They are great to open up to 2.02.

Most people over look vans when looking in the wrecking yards for J head engines. I have four sets and three of which I found in vans.
