Question

I need an education

since I am looking at (what the owner calls) a 69 Road Runner - how can I know for sure ?

Is there a number on the VIN to verify ?

it has a 440 and its auto

its been repainted / and I haven't had time to see if the numbers match or not....

I just don't want to be taken - or pay a Road Runner price, if its really just a Belvedere - well, you get the picture . . .

A 69 RR VIN on the dash will read RM21 for a coupe and RM23 for a hardtop. You could not get a 440 in a 69RR unless it was a 6 BBL car.

If you are thinking about buying this car, then you may want to verify that it also has the "fender tag" in the engine compartment drivers side & that the VIN is the same as on the dash. A common way to fake these cars is to remove the fender tag (so there is no conflicting evidence) & replace the dash pad with one that did come from a RM21 or RM23 car.

You would also do well to verify the sequence # (also called serial number) is stamped on the radiator support AND in the drip channel of the trunk on this year car. The sequence # is the last 5 or 6 digits of the VIN. If those numbers do not match in all 4 places ( dash, fender tag, radiator support, & trunk drip channel) beware!

One exception which is common is the # on the radiator support will not match, or has no # at all. This often happens when the car has suffered a significant collision to the front of the car & required a new replacement (no #) or a used (wrong #) replacement radiator support. You then need to inspect for just how much damage did it suffer.

If I can add to this...... The engine has a flat machined area above the oil pan on the passenger side of the block with a partial VIN.# and sequence # that corrospond with the vehicles VIN #. There is one on the transmission also but I'm not sure where that one is. I think it's on the L/side pan rail. And JERICOGTX is correct 68 & 69 RR came with the 383, and 440+6 as an option. 440 4bbl. was not available.
