I finally figured out why my car was missing but only sometimes!
Not only did my plug wires not fire correctly because I didn't have wire looms yet. Apparently when the wires touch each other they exchange current.
But they tend to slowly sneak off of the spark plug!
Sloppy set of wires! Ordered some Taylor wires I hear they fit the plugs better. wish me luck!

DONT USE TAYLOR WIRES WITH AN MSD! THERE IS TO MUCH RESISTANCE IN THE TAYLOR WIRES FOR IT TO WORK PROPERLY

Is it common to have problems with MSD wires? I haven't had any problems yet (I've had them about 6 months) but I'd like to be prepared.

I've heard same thing about MSD Wires lately.
Now what wires to run. How about Taylor "409" 10mm
or Crane's 10.5mm wires.

Cool Me neither!

I've had a set on my Slant for 2 years now with no problems. If a motor was gonna shake them off, it would be a Slant.

Only problem with MSD wires is getting them off the plug!!! I saw a picture of a head being hung from one MSD wire on a plug. MSD says no solid core wires on their sire.

Unhappy I was wrong

I guess the wires were not my only problem. seem my plugs fouled out again! After 200 miles. I turn my fuel pressure down to 4 psi instead of 5 to see if it makes a difference. Everything was soaked with gas.
But I do like the Taylor wires better.

R/T, are your floats set up correctly? just dribbling out of the vents at idle? Are you running a radical cam? Might want to open the secondaries a bit and close the primaries to get them back on the idle circuit. Ide also check you vacuum in drive and check your power valve rating, 1.5-2 below drive vacuum. Wet plugs could be incomplete combustion, fouled plugs sounds like mixture problems. Good luck.

I don't think your plug wires are the initial cause of the problem-unless you've damaged them by burning them on the headers or when you pulled them off the plugs. Pretty much any spiral wound metal conductor wire should be up to the job. I've found Jacobs to be the best as they vulcanize the boots to the wire which gives them the edge over everybody for insulation value. 8.5 is the biggest you need, anything else is overkill, and frankly, harder to work with................djs

I have a set of Jacobs' "energy core" wires on my 4WD pickup. They stay on, work very well and stand up to wet off road conditions. Being on a nice clean, dry car should be a piece of cake!

I've had them on for almost 6 years now.

69 gtx, I have a set of Jacobs wires on my 84 5th Ave. 318 that I put on in Jan. of 1990. They still work perfect, and the car has just over 450,000 kilometers on it (about 280,000 miles), most of them with the Jacobs wires. My 70 440 Cuda has the same set of Jacobs wires on it that we put on in May of 1990. Although it does not have near as many miles on it as the 5th Ave. does, there is lots of street/strip action and the under hood heat of that car is phenomenal. Never misses a beat and never burned a boot. (Hooker Suoer Comp. headers).........djs

Unhappy

Pishta, I have an Edlebrock 750. I dont know much about them It's not old but not sure how to check floats.
It seems to be running better since I turned the fuel pressure down. I have a 292-509 cam
Also I have no return line for fuel! I wonder if that has something to do with it?

Ok. no problem. No power valve to pop. Step up springs are the equivelant on a carter/edel. the lighter springs are used for the lopier cams (less vacuum needed to keep them lean). the secondaries can be adjusted though to keep you on the idle circuit. course you can always use larger rods to lean it out a bit, real easy on an edel!

Wink

Awhile back I bought a set of Pertronix Hi-po wires and when I installed the boots on the distributor they kept slipping off. It was like the rubber was too slippery to stay on the post because the post has a slight taper too.
Sent the wires back and got a set of Accel yellow 8mm and now I am happy.

Sometimes plug wire boots seem "greasy" and won't stay put as described above. The Fix? Spray the inside of the boots with brake clean or any quick drying solvent..................djs

If bigger is better (ie. 10.8!) when is it going to stop? I thought 8.8's were huge! How much bigger is the center electrode on those 10.8's?
