recently i purchased my brothers 81 chrysler cordoba with a 318 pre magnum, i currently still have a slant six in my car, i was wondering what i should do, up the slant six with 4bbl carb intake nad split headers or put in the 318 pre magnum and buy a new tranny to fit it, will the 318 drop in with the slant 6 k frame? besides a motor mount exchange or will i have to change k frame, i want what would be the best performance for right now, currently my slant six is basically brand new .06 over single bbl no emmisions on it, 10-1 compression ratio that will cost about 1k to get headers 4bbl ad new intake or get a tranny with the 318 and headers and motor mounts and put that in.... What would the best perfromance and mileage way to go, how much hp gain will i get with the items listed for the slant six its a 74 /6and its an 88 pre magnum 318... thanks and please reply asap

I personally believe that the money you will spend hopping up a /6 will get you much better horsepower in a 318, because you have more to start with. But it also depends on what you want, because if you want numbers matching and all that, you can just build your 6 up and have moderate performance. correct me if i'm wrong, but i do believe that the 318 will drop in with the same k frame, i know you have to swap it out if you put in a big block, but i think that's it. If your 318 is EFI, you better go with the /6, because you will have to swap computer, pump in tank, etc., which would be a huge-ass headache. Just my 2 cents worth.

Default well, actually.

my dart was originally a slant 6 car...you need to get a new k frame and maybe new suspension pieces (torsion bars, sway bars) in order to keep your ride quality.
you need a new transmission and possibly a new differential....the 7 and 1/4 that came in most /6 cars is not strong enough for a V8, no matter how weak the V8 is.
which also means you might need a new driveshaft.

but the performance from a 318 over a /6 is almost unbelievable...the horsepower numbers were only 40 difference but if you look at the torque the 318 carries almost 100 pounds more torque AVERAGE from 1500-3500 rpms
the 318 is a really sweet little street motor because it is making peak power by 3400 rpm...which isn't good for race, but awesome for the street.

hope i can help... i have lots of experience with the 318s (okay, not lots, but i have had a few of them) and if you need any further questions just ask

Thumbs up Correction

You do not need to change K frames. Contact Schaumacher Creative Services. There in most if not all MoPar mag's. The'll help you swap out the /6 for a 318, 340 or 400/440 engine without unbolting the K frame. There kits will let you drop one in.
"T" bars would help and sway bar upgradeing is not a dyer need. It would bennifit to do so. Grab a set from MoPar Performance.
A stock 318 from yesteryear put out 230HP as a 2 bbl. A stock 340 resto cam and a 4bbl (small 500-600cfm max) will wake it right up. Headers are a plus but needed for the combo. You'll bump that 3500RPM line up a bit to.
The computer and all ass. parts do not need to be swaped over.Swap out the intake thats there for the 4bbl, or 2bbl if prefered. Get the correct linkage and mount for the tranny. If the 318 has no fuel pump ecentric on the nose of the cam, an electric unit spliced inline can do the chores until a new cam and fuel pump bolt and ecentric can be purchased from MoPar Performance. Unless a fuel injected 318 is your fancy.
