Question

I would like to know if the center sections can be swapped. Do the casing #'s matter?
I have a section with 3.91 posi, casing # unknown, can I swap a 489 case with 4.10 posi with no modifications? Note:making banging noise per driveshaft revolution leading me to believe that section is bad.
I have no idea what year or any specs the current rear has. Any idea what that "banging" could be ?

I don't know about the banging...but you can use any center section in any housing.

the centersections can swap out, but the shafts have differring teeth for the u-joint. If you swap a unit with the u-jont attached, then you don't have to sweat it. Otherwise, you may need a new collar for the u-joint. Internally, they are the same, just that one is a newer(stronger?) unit. I have used both with no real problems.
The banging sounds like a bad differential, too tight or something. The differential can be adjusted, if you find someone with the skill and tools. Otherwise, you're in for a swap or rebuild that'll cost about 800- 1000 bucks. I have a diff that needs adjustment, maybe nothing else, but no local guy to work it. Oh well...

Just a quick thought have you checked the U-joints. WHen these go bad the driveshaft will bang.

On the note below the Yoke on the fron of the centersection needs to be the same size it its not you will need the conversion u-joint for large to small ujoints. I had to do this on my car when swapping center sections.
