Question

I need help on Torque Converter selection for my application. I am building a 451. Intended for street use, not a daily driver but an occasional dusting of a mustang or camaro. Here is my plan on engine at completion.

* KB 215 Pistons .030
* Hughes HE3038 or MP "509"?
* 906 Heads
* Performer RPM
* Holley Street Avenger 770cfm
* Headers
* 3.23/3.55 Axle

Are the Mopar Torque converters good? Koller Dodge has 2400-2800 stall for $127.

Anyone know anything about the "Generic" 3000rpm Torque Converters from JEGS ($179)?

Recommendations on Engine and or Torque Converter Appreciated.

I have a Dynamic 10" Race converter. They are about $500-$550, but they make a nice 10" street converter for about (I think) $350. The main difference is the race converter has the anti-balloning plate.

Mopar Performance says you need 3000-3500 with the .509 cam. I had a local tranny wizard build my TorqueFlite and he also built a 10" converter ($450) with an anti-balooning plate.
You may want to reconsider your cam/converter/gear ratio combination. A long duration cam needs higher converter stall speed and higher numeric gear ratios. Overall street drivability would probably be better with a milder cam if you plan on using 3.23 or 3.55 gears.

What is a good combo for a "hot" street car? Should I up the gears or use a milder cam or both? I want to be able to drive the car on the street.

Smile converter

I agree with amoparguy, I run the MP 509 cam in my truck. I use a Turbo-Action 10" and have used 4.10-4.56 gears. Believe me you need more gear than you have now! MY converter works fine around town and on the highway. But, when you stand on the gas it stalls at about 3800rpm. Also you must run a auxiliary trans cooler if you want your converter and tranny to live. The Turbo-action 10" is a little more expensive but you get what you pay for. I've had mine 10 years made Hundreds of passes down the quarter mile with slicks, and thousands of miles on the street and Never had any trouble what so ever!
Hope this helps, for what it's worth.

I agree with everybody, you definitely get what you pay for and the converter has a LOT to do with the performance of your car. DO NOT buy a G.E.R. converter, they are scam artists! Coan and turbo action make good stuff but I've had the best results with ATI.
If you don't want to spend much, go with a little smaller cam.

Thumbs up converter

I agree with Scamp, If you don't want to spend the money, go with a smaller cam. But if it was me, I'd spring for the good converter.
I tryed the same thing you are doing except I ran a 4.56 gear, It could not get out of it's own way until I put in a 10" Turbo action.
By the way, Nielsville, Minn. is 50 miles north of Fargo North Dakota. And as they said in the movie; YA YOU BET!

Thanks everybody. It looks like the concensus is spend a little extra and get a good converter so that is what I am going to do. I welcome any other recommendations for what I'm tring to do. BTW what is a good street/strip gear ratio? 3.91? If I have a 8 3/4 if it as simple as changing the gears? If I want sure grip or posi do you have to change the whole assembly. Sorry, Never did any rear axle work.

A lot depends on what kind of rpms you are comfortable with at cruising speed. If you are running a 26" tall tire and can live with 3000-3200 rpm @ 60 mph then go with a set of 3.91 gears. Chose a cam and converter that will work with the gears, maybe something like the MP .474"/ 280° hydraulic with a 2500-2800 converter.

A website that I'm putting together has a tire dia-gear ratio-rpms @ 60 chart and a javascript calculater that lets you experiment with the variables to try different combinations. Here's a link...
