Cool

I'd just like to say that I'm a proud owner of a '99 SLT plus Durango as of today. I can't wait to start learning everything about it. Anyway....I was just curious with the transfer case that's on it, it has 2H/4P/4F/N/4L with this part time and full time 4 wheel drive are all 4 wheels directly engaged or is it some other type of all wheel drive system at work? Thanks for your input.

Hi Fly, welcome to MoparChat!

Mind you I am not a mechanic so here it goes...

In part-time 4WD, the transfer case is direct coupled front and rear. The rear turns at the same speed as the front. This is suitable for slippery surfaces only. If used on dry pavement, it may cause drivetrain binding.

In full-time 4WD, there is a viscous (spell?) coupler that allows slippage. This allows you to to use it on dry pavement without worry.

2H would disconnect the front axle.

Hope this helps ya!

Fly2Crawl, congrats, I bought a 99 SLT last week and though I am not a stranger to the 5.2L, I still have a lot to learn about the Durango. You will love it.

Having been on a 2 week vaction, I have done nothing but tinker with it and do a few simple modifications.

Just a word of precaution, some general maintenance may be inorder, like plugs, fluids, etc. I found that my engine had the original Champion plugs still in it and the gap was so eroded it was reading .050 (OEM is .040).

Thumbs up

Thanks for the help. I think I will also change plugs and wires and such, maybe flush the radiator too, i'm sure that needs it.

Well.....it's mainly because I'm also a commercial pilot, I just kind of thought of the two words not even sure how. I think it just sounds kind of cool. And I found out that my Durango also has limited slip rear end. It was the first time I've driven it in the rain last night and I had it in 2H, I touched the gas turning right and the back end came around before the front, it was kind of fun so I just put it in 4F (sunvisor says safe for all roads surfaces) and it did fine.
