mopar performance ignition question
i installed electronic ignition i got orange box i got more power and speed i was thinking about advancing timing will that hurt any thing what are the pros and cons about it i read in 2 mopar muscle mags 69 down would need to change alternator and voltage regulator when i called tech line i was told as long as i have 12 volts comming in the system it dont matter so i got it hooked up with 68 alternator and regulator will this setup still be ok

I've been running mine for about 500 miles with the older charging system. I have had no real problems with it. What I do see, is if I am driving at night time, with the headlights on, she stumbles a little from a dead stop.
That is caused by the alternator not producing enough current. During tht time, I am running off of the battery and the headlights are dim. The orange boxe isn't receiving enough current to function properly. Once the RPMS come up to about 1,000 everything is alright again. I just need to put a smaller pulley on the alternator, so it will spin faster at idle. Advancing the timing won't hurt anything, unless you advance it to far. Also, don't over advance the vacuum advance unit. If you do, you will run hot at idle. |

The old charging system is OK, but the point type regulator does not maintain a smooth output voltage since the points are switching on and off which creates voltage spikes and surges.
You can tap into the Electronic ignition power supply wire and connect a capacitor (I would try a minimum of a 220uF, 50 Volt capacitor) from the power line to ground to normalize (and filter) the supply voltage to the ECU. |

MP sells a regulator that looks stock and puts ou t the voltage u need.

I think Mopar Performance calls it a constant voltage regulator and they probbly cost about $25? |
