Default Timing for a 383

I have a 383 recently rebuilt. It's 40 over with a 440 lift, 270 duration cam. Everything else is stock. Does anyone know what I should set the timing at?

Default Big block timing

Mopar Performance has recommmended for years that big blocks run best at 38 degrees of total advance at wide open throttle. If your going for maximum horsepower thats where I would set it. Mind you this is mechanical advance only, not vacuum. If your going to be driving it on the street and wish to retain vacuum advance for fuel economy I would set it around 7 before and see how it runs. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. One problem I'm having is that when I set the timming and check it another day it's not at were I set it. Has anyone every experienced this problem? And if you have do you know what is going on?

It sounds like you didn't have your dist. hold down tight enough,or you may have a dampner that is slipping the outside ring. waynebo

On my 383 it liked alot of initial timming, maybe because of the bigger cam and low compression, but total timming was still about 36-38 degrees.

Don't know if this is okay but, it seems to be fine on my 383HP. I set it at 38 deg total timming at 2500 rpm.
