Unhappy

My '79 B-body has developed a loud clunk in the front end. The sound happen when ever I accelerate from a stop or low speeds. It only happens during acceleration, bumps will not do it. This makes it hard to locate as bouncing the car while parked will not make it clunk. The car seems to drive strait and the tires are not worn in any strange way. The local alignment shop could not find it but had a simple solution, rebuild the whole front end.
What could this be?
I have a '79 Chrysler 300 with the police interceptor package heavy duty sway bar and all.

Check out your driver's side motor mount. I had a Ford one time that made a klunk. I discovered that the engine was lifting and "klunking" back down.

I agree. It sounds like the drivers side motor mount is broken.

I agree. I had a 383 car that broke mounts like crazy. Everytime it broke it wound raise up and the air cleaner would hit the hood! Have someone put the car in gear with the engine running. Watch to see if the motor raises up. Have your helper give it a little more throttle and check again. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Found the problem. Lower ball joint on the drivers side. I can't explain the reason why it clunked only on acceleration but replacing it fixed the problem.

The motor mounts are bad but not shot. I will replace them when I rebuild the engine this winter.

Thanks for the help.
