Default Gotta by a Torque Converter

I need to buy a torque converter my front seal on my 727 started leaking,I pulled it today and found a hairline crack on the hub near the locking lug. Whenever I get on the car I think the crack flexes and cuts into the seal. Anyway I opened up the Summit,Jegs,Mopar, and the PAW catalogs today and I wasn't impressed with there info on converters, they weren't very Mopar friendly. So I figured I'd ask the Pro's.

I have a: 70RR,383,10-1 .30over cast crank, .509 cam, M1 single plane 750 Holley 4160 jets 76Ft/81Rr lightest spring ,452 2.14/1.81 unported, stock 727 with cooler.

I'm currently running a 3.23 suregrip with 225/70/14, best ET 13.55, I do on occasion use a 4.56 suregrip when I feel like playing the Red light Bandit so we got to put it on the list.

My broken torque converter was a GER 3500 stall unit. Other than the name I can't tell you much about it, it came with the car.

So which one do I need? My cam requires a high stall unit right? Mother Mopar says use P4876879, but it's only a 1750 unit.

HELP!!!!!
Rob

Default GER is junk

I have heard nothing but BAD new concerning GER converters.
Probably the best for the money is a Turbo Action converter. You won't break that one.

Oh no, I don't even want to talk about what I went through with GER-JUNK! You will also need to have your tranny gone through to clean out all the GER metal clumps and shavings.
The torque converter is very important for performance, do not skimp in this area, your best bet would be a custom built one for your application but if you can't afford that at least call ATI, T.A., Coan or Dynamic and ask their opinion. I'd suggest a 10 inch competition model for your car, 3000-3500 stall.

I would go with a Coan. Have had no problems witht them in the past. I oredered mine last week for my 904. If you drive the car alot on the street a 3500 would be good. If you can though try going to a 3800. Call Coan and see what they will build for you. Ill never buy a convertor that isnt built for my car. They only bad about Coan is that they are a lil high. But you dont want to get cheap. Mine was $560. I look at it this way. I rather do stuff rite the first time so i wont have to worry about it.

Count me in for one more GER horror story!!! I won't get into it.
I woul have to agree you converter is very important to performance, but you have to ask yourself how much street driving do you do verses strip time? Every thing has trade offs, A good street converter isn't the best strip converter, and vice versa.
In general 3000-3500 stall is a little much for heavy street use but its ideal for a mild setup like yours. Also I have found that you get what you pay for, so a little more now saves alot later.

The .509 cam calls for 3000 - 3500 rpm converter. I had a 10" converter built for my Plymouth and the performance improvement over the stock converter was very dramatic. A good converter isn't cheap (mine was just over $500) but compared to the price of a new carb or a set of roller rockers, you get alot of bang for your buck!

For your cam you'll need at least a 10" 3,000+ stall converter. I have a Dynamic which I really, really like I have heard good comments on the Coan, and a few other less know brands that seem to do more with Mopars.
I also got burned by GER junk converters.

I bought my Dynamic 10" Race converter on sale from Mancinni Racing for $500 (normally $550?).
The Race version of the converter has anti-balooning plates and it may have some heavy duty internal upgrades? over a normal 10" converter. I think the normal 10" was about $350 (?)

Has or is anyone using a rebuilt mopar converter offered in their performace catalog. I think that's the way I'm going to have to go due to cost. It's a baby vs car in my house right now, and I sure my daughter will win.

I've heard a few good things about them, no horror stories. I know what you mean about the baby, I got a 17 month old boy at home, its hard to get anything done, but oh so worth it!

I'm very surprised that nobody has mentioned TCI. These people, after to ger nightmare, set me straight with no remorce. Not that others out there are not doing the same. Just that i have never come acrost another unhappy with TCI. I bought a 2500 stahl for my 318,and after GER and B&M nightmares,i wanted to shake everybodys hand at TCI for doing just what they said. Same with traneys. Couldent get one to last to save my life, accualy thought about a brand x conversion, shame on me. Till TCI sent me one. And now 8 years later still going strong. TCI is a a$$ kicking companey. Just surprised not to see another endorcement.lol
