I posted this on another area of the board, with only 1 response, so I decided that I would try here as well.

I am looking at upgrading the ignition system on my '69 Coronet. I am looking at either the Mallory Unilite or the MOPAR breakerless upgrade with the orange box.

I've never used the MOPAR system. I have used the Mallory Unilite and liked it very much.

I just have some basic questions.

1) If I go the MOPAR way, will I need to upgrade the charging system as well?

2) Can I run an MSD-6AL or the Crane HI-6 with the MOPAR distributor or can I only use the MOPAR ECUs with this?

3) What are the PROs and CONs of the MOPAR unit (already know most of the with the Mallory).

4) What is everybodies preference, based on first hand experience?

Ans. to #1 ...NO

ans. to #2 ...Yes you can to the 6-AL, have not seen the crane HI-6 inperson. The MoPar box is a basic box where as the others are more advanced. I have run the 6-AL box with the Mopar distrib.,and it work fine.

ans. #3 ... PRO It is a stock distrib with an adjustable adv. & the springs inside are light, so the adv. is quick. CON...?????

ans.#4...My first exp. with MSD was unpleasent, the box went, they have made up for it and have not had a problem since. 5yrs. later the coil went while driving.
I ordered a MoPar ignition kit, and the box (orange) was bad out of the wraper. I ordered from Summit racing, and they seny me a new one free. It's been ten years with no problem.

I've used the Mopar setup for many years. It has worked flawlessly, with no problems, both in the race cars and street machines.Plus,if something does go away, parts are at the nearest wrecking yard!!

Hate the Mallory..too sensitive to everything. LOVE the MP unit..worked flawlesly, hooks right up, and if you want MSD, MP has a matching unit that also hooks right up.

Convert to the MP conversion kit, then check out Jacobselectronics.com. It comes complete with 8.5mm wires. Summit will have a better price than buying direct form Jacobs. Call jacobs and ask for a tech named Jared. He isn't one of those guys that will tell you a little aan constantly ask if you are ready to order. He is a "senior Tech" They are supposed to be better than MSD. You get what you pay for and I love mine.

I use a jacobs pro-street ultra team on a slant six with great results. Would be great if I had a 3.55 rear instead of a 2.91.

I ran a first generation Jacobs back when it was new. The first one died about 2 months after installation. After several phone calls to Jacobs, the finally decided that they would exchange it for a new one. No problems after that.

Back then, the system had a three position toggle switch. Standard ignition/Off/Computer. There was a notable difference with the computer.

Many people here say that they have had better luck with the MSD-6AL.

I still see the Jacobs as an advantage, as it measures spark resistance to determine when it should stop sparking the plug. The MSD sends a set amount of sparks, based on RPM(mostly based on educated guess).

I think that for now, I will upgrade to the electronic ignition system and then upgrade to an ignition computer later.

This old car still has an 8.25 rear with 2.73:1 peg leg. Need to find an inexpensive 8.75 or Dana with a posi. I still remember picking up a B body Dana posi, about 13 years ago, for $150. Too bad it went with my '67 Charger, when I sold it.

I went to Jacobs the other day and they have a sensor that detects when you are going up a steep grade and it increases the spark! $45 Gonna get me one.
