harmonic dampner removal
I know this is one of the old posts somewhere but the search function doesn't seem to work. What is up with that? Anyway, I'm trying to remove the dampner from a 340 with 4spd. I've got a rachet and a big long breaker bar but there is too much give. I put the trans in 4th. What is the trick?

You need to "shock" the bolt to get it started out. Since it may be too close to get an impact gun in there, use a breaker bar & hit it with a hammer to get it started on it's way. After you get it loose it should come right out.

I always just wedge a screwdriver into the flywheel. I've never had a problem doing it that way.

I just did this. Bring a cylinder up to about 1 or 2 inches before top dead center. Take some rope and feed it down through the spark plug hole, this will hold the balancer bolt tight. I got this tip off of this site and it worked great !

does anybody know if the rope trick will work trying to put a damper back on? I heated it in the oven for like 30 minutes and still had to use the old one to "hammer" it on far enough to get the bolt started. The torque of the bolt overcame the piston pressure about 1/4 inch from the proper pulley alingment. Does the dampner actually bottom out or do you just "eyeball" the groove alignment?? thanks

As far as installing and removing the dampner, I use the removal/installation kit. The hammering isn't too good for the crank (causes stress that it isn't designed for) or the bearings.
As far as tightening the bolt goes, again, I just wedge a screwdriver into the flywheel or torque converter. Then I tighten it to proper torque specs. |

The rope trick works for installation also. Like Ehostler said just tighten to proper specs.
