Question

Sometime back, Mopar Action ran an article on making a homemade flowbench. I still have the article, what i want to know is has anyone tried it? does it work? any opinions? It's kinda interesting that the instruments they use in the article are made here in my home town, just down the street, so i shuold not have any problems getting them.

Yea, I saw the same article...and actually built it. It took me a little more than they claimed but it may just be the cost of some of the pieces in my area....I also opted out of the waferboard and went for the more stout 1 inch plywood.

Total for everything was about $400. That included a used shopvac from a pawn shop.

It works great for a basic flowbench...but don't expect to push the water much past 8 inches or so...at least not with a stronger shopvac.

The thing I like is that it gives a weekend mechanic like me something usually reserved for a full-on machine shop...plus it saves about $2000 bucks off the cost of a comparable low-end industrial flowbench.

$400, thats reasonable. I think i might look into this a bit more. A young lady at work that works in the engineering dept. doing enviornmental stuff is always testing the cfm and velocitys of our dust collector systems, i might get with her also and see if she can shed some light on my dim brain. thanks for the input.
Christopher, the is was a tech. special, #7. the copyright date is 1997, but i don't know what month it came out. I think the tech issues come out twice a year. I just stumbled across it one day at the book store as i have never had a script to mopar action. If you cannot find a back issue let me know by e-mail or the board and i will try to scan it and send it, or i can photo copy it and send it to you.

Cool

Hey, I just found this too...looks like some guy wanted to show his off.
http://www.htrd.com/htrd/flowbench.html

Good luck on it, it's not all that hard to do but you might wanna figure out a way to enclose the vacuum...I think my wife is gonna kill me while I'm flowing one of these days just so she won't have to listen to it anymore.

Your vacuum source can be obtained in a variety of ways, as long as it is reliable and repeatable from day to day and week to week. Years ago I went into Smokey Yunick's shop and his flow bench ( which dated back to the 60's ) was powered by a GMC blower driven by a 5 HP motor. That's really a fairly cheap source of vacuum.

Well, I hope MA doesn't mind me posting the parts list...I sent an email to Rick asking that they make a temporary home on the web for building that wonderful tool.

Here is the parts list for it for those that want to get everything ready for the build.

Here's the parts you need for the flowbench. I couldn't get my scanner
working so wanted to at least get you the parts list.

Buy the following items at the local hardware store:

Quantity Part Description
1 10ft. piece of four inch diameter PVC pipe
2 90 degree PVC fittings in four inch
4 45 degree PVC fittings in four inch
2 Vacuum Gates in Four inch diameter (used in a manifold dust
collection system)
1 4 to 3 inch PVC pipe adapter
1 3 to 2 inch PVC pipe adapter
1 2 inch PVC "T" connector
1 ft. piece of 2 inch diameter PVC pipe
1 2 inch PVC gate valve
1 Can of PVC glue
1 Package of JB Kwik Weld epoxy
1 25ft. of 1/8 inch inside diameter clear plastic tubing
1 3ft. of 1/8 inch inside diameter brass or aluminum tubing
1 Gallon of Distilled Water
1 Tube of food coloring
1 Yardstick scaled in both inches and millimeters
2 8ft x 4ft. sheets of 3/4 inch plywood/particle board/wood -
Particle Board is least expensive
1 24in. x 48 1/2in. white pressboard shelf
1 Sears 6hp shop vac.
1 Roll of 1/16in. black pinstripe tape
1 Dwyer air velocity calculator #A-532

To get the velocity calculator contact:
Dwyer Instruments, Inc.
P.O. Box 373 - 102 Highway 212
Michigan City, Indiana 46361-0373
Sales Only: (219) 879-8000
General Office: (219) 879-8868
Fax: (219) 872-9057

In the event that MA doesn't post the destructions (er...instructions) I'll write up an "article" myself on how to build it. It seems since I've shown it to a bunch of shop buddies they all want one too so I can take pictures during the build.

Prior to purchasing his flow bench, Monte my engine builder looked into building his own using a leaf blower. I don't know much more than that. I will e-mail him and ask him what he had for instructions and who originated them.

I think that Smokey's blower bench was one of if not the first flow bench outside of Detroit.

Hey thanks for the list of materials. I am rounding them up as we speak. I am having troubles with some of the parts but will have them soon. But what do I do with them when I have them all. Also, I just got an E-mail back from Rick. He says that he didn't write the issue but he will give permistion to anyone who wants to post the article if they ask him first. Thank for the help.

I apologize for not responding sooner, i just started working midnights and my opportunities to visit the site are hit and miss.

Hey motorhead400 I would like to see a copy
as well. I do have plans for a flowbench
that uses stacked vacume cleaner motors.
I would like to see this one to see which
I would rather use. The manometer will
be the trick I think.

Thanks,

I have a vacuum for my wood shop that I think will work for this application. I am not sure what it is rated at but the motor is 5HP and runs on 220V.

Thanks
Scott

Hey thanks for the effort. This is really going to come in handy. Now I will now what the hell I am doing and won't end up with a set of heads that will flow about as good as a five horse moter. Maybe when I bet mine built I will compare some percentages of stock to modified flow with everybody. skroeplin@freure.com

I would also appreciate a copy if possible. It looks like your going to be tied to the computer for awhile with the amount of takers on this.

Thanks in advance,

If I could get you to Email me as well, I would definitely be in your debt. I have been trying to find all articles on flowbenching but they led me to just buy one for a few grand. If you can Email me one, I definitely owe you one! Thanks so much for your time.

Hey Motorhead, I did not get a copy yet. Did I miss the list or are you having trouble? If there is anything I can help you with, feel free to contact me. I am pretty eager to start this project. The cabin fever is gettn' to me. I am even reduced to reading old copies of Hotrod.

Thanks,
Scott

Hey guys i have sent about six copys of the article, it takes about ten minutes for my server to sent it. I think one of the copys was sent back for some reason. I might have to break down the file into the pages and send them that way. Bear with me guys.
