SB pushrods
Can you use solid (not hollow) pushrods in 318's? (stock, '74(?))
Can someone explain the oiling of the lifters/rockers in the process of your yes or no to the pushrod question? |

Only the newer small block "Magnum" engines need the hollow pushrods. These newer engines have cylinder heads that use stud mounted rocker arms, not the older style "Shaft" mounted rocker arms.
The newer Magnum rocker gear is oiled through the hollow pushrod (with special lifters), but the older shaft rockers were oiled from the hollow rocker shaft. The rocker shaft got its oil through a series of oil passages through the cylinder head and engine block that leads to the oil at the cam bearing(s). You can use hollow pushrods on the older engines without problem. To use the newer Magnum heads on an older block, you need to use "AMC" lifters that will pump oil through the hollow pushrods to the rocker gear. |
