Default need help on timing adj on 69 440

1969 440 474 cam stock avs carb

trying to time at 36 deg total the light
is a new varable timing with 0 to 60 deg on dial
hooked up to #1 adv is already pluged off
cant read scale looks like 3 lines below a hole
on scale and 3 above it book shows this as 10 b4 and 10 after, i want to set total adv and record
as rpm goes up. the eng builder marked what i think is 34 deg , anyway this line is way past
scale with light on 0 , if i move it to 60 deg
the mark gets closer to the scale, but not on it
at 700 rpm's
do i have the wrong mark? its the only one i saw
how do i set the light dial
i want 36 deg total adv , dont plan on vac adv line to stay looked up with my 474 cam
thanks in advance , bill

Bill, your post is somewhat confusing. (maybe it's me) Anyway, put a timing tape on your harmonic balancer, mark 36 deg. on the tape and TDC on the timing tab with white out or anything that will make them both really visible with the timing light. With the engine fully warmed up, adjust the curb idle screw to give you about 2000 rpm. turn the dist till you're at 36. lock her down. Reset the carb to the idle speed you had before starting this.............djs

ok- i take it your timing chain cover marker has the hole at tdc?Like some of the chrome ones? And that you also want to record your timing curve.Run it at idle, check the timing and turn the dial till the timing mark lines up with the hole.Read what the number is on the timing light knob and that is what your timing is set at.keep raising the rpm's and repeating the last step and you'll have your timing curve mapped out.If you just want 36 degrees set the knob on the light at 36,bring the rpm's up till you have all the advance in and move the distributer till the mark is lined up with the hole.I like the timing tape better cause it's easier for one person to do ,but since you have a dial back timing light already go for it!

Default here is the problem

i see how to use the light, but i cant get

34 deg line to line up at tdc, if if more dial to
60 deg 34 deg mark gets closer to tdc but not there, if i try to retard timing a lot to get
the 34 deg line at tdc it almost dies
sounds like by ear it needs to be where its at

my marc is say at 9 0 clock with about 800 rpm
in relation to the balancer sees the timing indiciator, which appears way advanced.
can the distr be in wrong say 1 slot off. or does that matter when using a light or tape.

no adv hooked up either,

thanks in advance again,bill

Have you checked to make shure the timing mark is correct? I just had the harmonic balancer go bad on my truck.I went to time it and the mark was way off.tried it again another day and it was even farther off.The outer ring with the timing mark was slipping.Swapped in another balancer and it's all good.Is yours showing tdc for #1?-Tom.

Default cant move balancer at least by hand

i also checked the 34deg marc, found a another

straight line marc below it say if 34 deg at 9 o clock this blank mark is at 7 or 8 oclock

thats this line, did my motor builder

add this 34deg line in the wrong place.
i thing some time ago i chked timing and things worked
how do ya check to see if balancer moved,???????? this is the only explanation i can
assume what happened?
motor liked timing whers its at, should i just
leave it alone,
my stock origional harm bal could it be bad
its hard to see in my 440 not much room
