Can one of you guys out there tell me if some kind of thrust washer belongs under the distributor gear on the oil pump shaft on 383 - or does it just ride on the bronze bushing? I put a motor togeather recently and am getting a strange whirring sound that is hard to tell where it is coming from but seems to be up front. I couldn't hear it with the open headers, but now with exhaust on it, it is definately noticeable.

my .02 from a limited background
1. waterpump- a new alum. pump had a weep hole on the underside of it that I put newspaper in to paint the outside, forgot to take the paper out and the rotation of the pump sounded like a bearing going out, took the paper out, no more noise 2. Alternator bearing going, belt to tight - used to know some guys that thought it was a cool blower-like sound, until the alternator smoked one night 3. power steeering pump- low fluid/ bad bearing Get a long length of vacuum hose and use it like a stethascope to isolate the sound while the motor is running. |

Thanks for the replies. I had it running with all the belts off and still makes noise. It's inside. Can't do much till saturday. Will try the vac hose thing.
