I have a set of rods from an industrial 413 engine. These are the numbers on the rod 1851535ly df40-1 and ms3049. These numbers dont seem to match anything i can find in a book. Does anyboby know what they compare to and are they any good?

LY rods are the standard RB rods used virtually forever. Fine rod up to 500 hp or so. I just got a set of Manley rods today. $375 for a set of 8. Very nice rods with big ARP cap screws, bronze bushed for 0.990 pins etc. Anyone interested in those rods can pick them up at the manleyperformance.com web site. Go to the sale section.

According to HP books, "Big Block Mopar Engines" that is the standard RB rod. More specifically:
1851535 (LY) was used on: 1962-65 413 and 426 standard engines 1966-74 440 except for the HP and six-barrel engines |

Hemi rods are the only ones left. They work great in a 440 motor, just need a slightly shorter piston. Ross pistons don't cost anymore with a custom pin height so there is no difference in building an engine around these rods. Of course, if you already have pistons then you're out of luck. A shorter piston and a 0.990 pin will save quite a bit of weight in a 440 motor.

I agree they would be a great value for a 440 (RB) motor. When you order a higher pin height (smaller compression height) in a Ross, is it the same piston (say #82008 with 1.094 pin or #99539 with 0.990 pin) only drilled higher or is the rest of the dimensions changed to go with the higher pin?
One way saves weight, the other is the same weight as their off the shelf. [This message has been edited by 440 Jim (edited October 11, 2000).] |

I don't know, I suppose it depends on where the ring pack is and if they can move the pin without compromising the ring pack. Moving the pin up 0.200 isn't really very far since the 440 has such a tall piston to start with. Add the fact that you're using a smaller pin than stock and my guess is that they use the same piston, just drill it in a different spot. A quick call to Ross will answer the question though.

Was considering usong those rods in my stroker, it would still leave the CH to 1.65" which is 0.3" more than in a '451'. but I guess I will not add an extra penny to the already big costs, and use my old stock length rods. The long rods are also a little heavier, what is the effect on the bobweight compared to a 6.76" length rod? Hom much lighter should the piston be to retain the balance?

I posted this once but I guess it didnt post for some reason.
Does anybody know that these longer rods definitely wil or will not work in a 451 combo? Has any one checked? If no one has I will look into it. I think maybe I will have to give Ross a call today.
