Turbo 318...How can I do it???
Ok, this may sound stupid. But I was wondering, with all this turbo talk going around, how hard would it be to put a turbo on my 318 in my 68 Charger? I, like the others, was thinking of a turbo off a 2.2 and fabricating it onto my smallblock. Can it be done with one turbo...or do I need two? My motor has the stock 9 to 1 compression. I would freshen the motor up of course. I just need to know how to hook it up right. Are there any pics of smallblocks with turbos out there. Also, would the performance gain be worth the effort of doing it? THX

It can be done but you have to be pretty crafty at doing things. If you cant fabricate things or dont know anyone that can help you out I would recmond a super charger. You have buy a bolt on kit for 3100 and get up to 480hp at 5lbs of boost. Turbos are a lot of work to get to work rite.

You will have to fabricate the exhaust manifolds, and the plumbing from the turbo to the carb. There are several places you can tap into the oil supply to get oil to the Turbo, but you will need a oil return line that plumbs into the oil pan.
You really need to contact a company that specializes in TurboCharging as they may have a kit, and they will know about what size turbo will work with your engine. I think the turbo off a 2.2L engine will be too small for a 318? |

Thanks for the info. Anybody else have any input??? Do you think it would be worth the trouble??

We have been running a twin turbo 340 in our 70 Challenger for 14 years, and I would never go back to normally aspirated. We have huge power, great driveability and over 20 mpg. We run 14 psi boost on pump gas with an intercooler and water injection. It is currently on a Speedpro EFI, but has had an Accel EFI and has been carburated.

Hey boosterboy
what didja do with that old Accel unit? I remember the diiscussion but don't remember the outcome.
Yeah, a pair of 2.2 turbos would suffice for a mild boost 318. They get used on 302s quite frequently. |

318 buildup for boost
I've done some thinking about a good, cheap turbo engine... hows about a standard 70's 318 with stock 360 heads on it. It'll have the larger valves and ports that'll work well with boost and also the compression ratio will be pretty low so you can run relatively high pressures. And, if it happens to blow up, who cares? Those 318's are so cheap and easy to come by. I have 3 or 4 perfectly good longblocks sitting in my yard, pondering their fate. If only they knew what I had in store for them, heh heh heh.

Goose-- Good idea, but I would stay with the small valves to keep your low end, you don't need the big valves to make the power.
TT440--The old Accel sat around for about a year, but nobody wanted it. I wound up taking it apart to see how it worked, and then tossed it. ouch! |

I was thinking of the stock (1.88 intake etc.) 360 valve sizes. Larger meant relative to the 318 valves. This for cheapness but as you say will help the low end too... yet another good benefit of the engine combo. Thanx for pointing that out!
