Question

I just purchased a 1974 440 block that has been bored to .040 over. The problem is that I have purchased a set of KB pistons at .030 over.

The reason I did this was that the original block I was going to use was .030 over but after we cleaned it up and checked it out a sonic test found a crack that wasn't noticed by inspection before cleaning.

Now, my question is:

1. Has anyone here ever had a 440 sleeved?
2. What was the result?
3. How much does sleeving cost these days?

I want to sleeve all 8 cylinders back to .030 over...would this be reasonable?

Regards.
Ag

You really don't want to sleeve all 8 to get back to 0.030 over. It is going to cost you more to sleeve that block that to buy new pistons. Cheapest deal is to sell that block and find another 440. Around here a 440 shortblock goes for maybe $150. Local u-pull-it yard charges $50 for a shortblock but you have to lay on your back for a half day to wrench it out.

I had to sleeve one hole once,it worked well, did it because the boring bit came out and chunked the hole, the machine shop stood behind it and didnt charge me for ANY short block work only parts. The only thing I noticed was during break in,that cyl's header got glowing red hot, moreso than the others,it never did it again. In your case though 451 is right,it will be too costly and its not really a standard you want fot hi-po stuff. Can you return the pistons?tell them you had to bore it more to clean it up than you thought, which actually is true. But boring a 74 block more than .030 really isnt advisable w/o sonic testing so maybe youll just need another block...PRO...
