Default Starter Heat Sheild

I'm replaceing the starter in my 360 Duster, also replaceing the headers, the old ones I am sure are part of the culprit for cooking the starter. My new flow tech headers are ceramic coated to help with that problem but I was thinking about a heat sheild. Do you think I need to make one still? And if I do who has build one? Not sure how to cover the selonoid but not touch the wires.

If you're replacing the starter why not use one of the late model Nippodenso starters? It comes with a heat shield and it is about 10 lbs lighter. Besides, it cranks over a lot faster than that old Mopar anchor.

The mini starter is a little to pricey besides I already have a rebuilt mopar starter. Besides the double reduction just sounds so damn cool! Some people said not to use the wrap style as it keeps heat in the starter. Is this true?

It's worked OK for me so far. Have had it on about 3000 mi. I dont know about keeping heat in, maybe it does, but thats nothing compared to whats coming at it from the outside, if you think about it.

Most full size dodge vans ( at least in the 80's and 90's) came with starter heat shields clamped to them. You might want to try your local salvage yard. The only tool you'll need to get one will be a 1/4" slotted screw driver and maybe a jack (although I have removed them through the dog house cover on the drivers side).
Good luck.

As I recall, the heat shield only needed about an inch clearance. If you buy one new, you can probably test fit it against a new starter while you're at the parts dept. If you go for a used one you see how it fits before you remove it.
