Default Torqueflite 727 Band Adjustment

Can anyone tell me what tool I can use on the adjustment locks on my 1974 A-727 tranny? I can't seem to get a wrench in there because of the limited room, and a socket won't allow me to hold the adjuster in place while locking it down.

Thanks,

moparmarc

While this site tells you *what* to do, it doesn't tell you *how* to do it (i.e. how to loosen both adjusters, since a wrench won't fit on the nut).

Try a different brand of wrench or a deep socket to loosen the locknut. You will have to disconnect the kickdown and shift rods, maybe even the cooler line.
Loosen the lock nut and finger tighten the adjuster. I put a piece of tape over the socket for the adjuster and marked with a pen the 0,90,180,270 with unique marks so I can count turns. Torque and note the position on the tape. Turn out 2 1/2 turns? I find the factory spec to be too loose so I go a 1/4 turn less than listed. Hold the adjuster from turning while you finger tight the locknut. One final grunt on the locknut, it shouldnt move the adjuster much if any, and hook everything back up.
If you still cant get room to operate, loosen the trans mount and drop down on a jack some, but dont crack your distributor cap.

I'll try that. Since the carburetor and intake are off, do I still need to disconnect the kickdown lever at the transmission?

Once you gain access to it, the best method is this to adjust them: Tighten both bands until the driveshaft won't turn ( in anything but Park). Then, loosen the rear band slowly until it will just begin to turn in one direction. Now add 1/2 turn looser and tighten the nut. For the front band do the same thing until it will turn in the other direction and then also give it 1/2 turn more and tighten that one too. They now have the optimum adjustment for your tranny.
