I wouldn't add any chips, injectors or other power adders until the low mileage problem is indentified and fixed as it could compound the problem. How many miles does your truck have? I believe recomended change intervals for the fuel filter/water separator are every 7K miles for the ISB5.9...i go 10K...to answer your question, the fuel filter cannister is on the driver's side of the engine...you'll see the rubber line plumbed to it and you'll see the line out to where it feeds the injection pump....loosen the cannister, pull it out(try not to spill) loosen the filter and fill new filter with diesel, attach and put the cannister back on.
Here are part numbers Mopar fuel filter 04883963AB Fleetguard fuel filter FS19528 Does the truck burn clean, or does it smoke? if so how much and at what point does it smoke?what color is the smoke? Have you lost any power? Here is a list of 1998's TSBs http://www.dodgeram.org/tech/tsb/0_98tsb_indx.htm |

The truck only has 50k. The truck runs perfect exept for the mpg. Can you think of anything else it could be.
thanks The Diablo power puck is already on there and has been on for about 30k. |

Is this mileage combined: highway and city...is this pulling mileage or combined empty??? Is this mileage from the trip computer or did you calculate from the odometer?
No offense, 10 MPG is rather awful for the Dodge/Cummins, I drive like a maniac and still get around 17 MPG. Assuming with the Power Puck you do get a little puff of smoke off the line? Do you have gauges? ie: pyrometer and boost? if so what are your peak readings? What size tires are you running? Are they inflated to max? if they aren't you might try bringing up the tire pressure a little.(less rolling resistance) What rear end ratio do you have 3.55 or 4.10? First thing i'd check would be the intercooler hoses and V-clamps make sure they're tight(no charge air leaks), if those check out OK you might try changing the the bleed orifice on the turbo, back to the stock orifice(assuming the Power Puck comes with one)...this will bring down boost a bit in turn you will burn less fuel. If those angles are to no avail check out these 2 links about the Intake air temp sensor and poor mileage: http://smokindiesel.com/Technical.htm http://128.242.249.86/forums/showthr...&highlight=IAT http://128.242.249.86/forums/showthr...&highlight=IAT If that doesn't work, have the wastegate checked to make sure it's functioning(if you have no boost gauge)there is a TSB on this: 11-08-98 SEP 98 Turbo Diesel Wastegate Actuator Repair Kit . If none of the above work, take Power Puck off of the truck and take it to the dealer, see if they'll give you an ECM reflash for low mileage. I know 50K miles, worth a try though...good luck |

That actual mileage was w/no pulling just putting around in town and some interstate. Regular size tires, no smoking or anything odd. Would you recomend I take it to the dealer or a cummings authorized shop. Thanks for the information. I think I am going to change the Fuel Filter first and if that does not help then I am going to take it in for a Service.
thanks again |

If you want warranty work, you're gonna have to take it to the dealer: some dealers are cool in that they might have a tech take a glance at it and give you a work order for a Cummins shop; if you take it directly to a Cummins shop and bypass the dealer entirely, it will be coming out of your wallet. What will happen is really determined by the dealer's service writer/mgr.; you do have 50K miles left on that engine warranty, i'd pull the puck off and the boost elbow/bleed orifice(should be explained in the Power Pucks instructions), bite the bullet and explain your woes to the service writer/mgr, an ECM reflash, an new IAT sensor or wastegate repair kit might be the answer. If and when you take the truck in, don't be afraid to ask alot of questions about what they might check and why. Good luck! |

98 24 valvers are very notorious for the lack of fuel milage they get,,I myself have not installed any of the Diablo boxes but had a long lengthy talk with a rep of theirs at ACN a few weeks ago and will get the number for him posted in morning tommorrow,,I have just came in from my trip out west and all the info is at my garage,,As for the no start, sounds like you completely drained the filter and did not refill it,,Two schools of thought here lie,#1-remove it and fill it 3/4 full and truck will catch and run and #2-If the batteries are strong enough turn it over till it fires,,Do it a little at a time though,no sense ruining a set of batteries,,Also make sure you are using a aftermarket air filter(K&N or Amsoil) it will help her breath and help milage,,Another trick for our trucks when changing fuel filter is to fill the cannister with Powerservice instead of diesel fuel,it will clean the injectors and does help,,One thing I do not see you relate is the power, does it have it all or does it seem weak??,,Primer pump for lift pump is on the drivers side of the engine located near the bottom in front of the starter,,You'll have to check to see if you have one as some of the early 24 valers had mechanical lift pumps and the rest have the Carter electric pumps,,Another thing to look at is the fuel shutoff solenoid, make sure you did not knock the wire off to it causing it not to engage and allow the truck to start,,Let me know how you make out and I'll send the Diablo number to you via private message...LONG LIVE THE THUNDER TRUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

I appreciate the information. I never found the primer but, I did get the truck started. The power feels good in the truck. I am having some gages put in this week and I am having a mechanic that knows the Diablo Product To be sure it is set up correctly.
What mods have you done to your truck? |

Seems in my cleaning of my desk i can not find the business card I got from the dealer that was at ACN selling the Diablo equipment,,I do remember him saying that upgrades are available for free on the box, but,I'm not sure how that applies to the second owner,,I did however find the Diablo info packet he gave me and here is their web page www.diablosport.com hope this will help,,I can also remeber the dealer telling me he was from the Cleveland/Akron,OH area,,When I find it I'll get his number up,guess i shouldn't have reorganized my work desk its better off a mess at least I could find stuff...
