Default mopar tranny questions

have some questions about mopar trannies (bear with me as i am still learning about mopars)

1:is the 727 or 904 refered to as the tourqueflite
or is it both or something else all together?

2:which is considered as being better?

reason i ask it i was looking at the original option sheet that came with my 67 fury and it has torqueflite automatic trasmisson listed as one of the options

thanks for any help

The 904 and the 727 ( and 998/999 ) are all torqueflights. The 727 is stronger but may not be neccessary for a given combo. The 904 can be built very strong, and is easier to turn so it consumes less horse power.
Actually, the valve bodies interchange but are calibrated differently. ( don't just change them and expect the second trans to shift exactly like the first ).

My understanding of the issue is; Chrysler used the 727 only on the big blocks, the only exception being, that they were used on the 340ci cars in the 70's. Probably a good bet that your 318ci didn't come with a 727. And, yes the pans are shaped differently.

Heres a much better site and shows the differences between a 727 and 904 transmission:

I ONCE HEARD THE 727 WAS USED ONLY ON B.B. & 340,I BOUGHT A 75 SPORT FURY 318,(NEW), SO I KNOW IT HAD NOT BEEN CHANGED, I WAS DOING A TRANNY SERVICE & THE 904 GASKET WOULDNT FIT ,IT WAS A 727.I THINK SOMETIMES THEY PUT WHATEVER WAS AVAILABLE ON THE ASSEMBLY LINE.....
