If the housing had a 741 case in it when new, can you put a 489 or 742 case in there?

You can also take a SureGrip from a 742 or a 489 and install it into a 741 case if you use the right carrier bearings.

Cool

You can also put 489 case gears into 742 case, needs some lathe work on the pinion bearing surface. It holds, using one in my racecar right now. Needed to do this swap two seasons ago 'cause of budget reasons and it's still there

You might get by with a precision lathe cut, but for the part of the shaft that the bearing mounts to, I would recommend a tool post grinder on the lathe. I don't know the shaft size tolerance recommended by Timken, but I would guess it is no more than 0.0005 inches.

That is my understanding too. However, I am not sure which bearings to use. I think you use the bearings for the suregrip you are using. This implies all the bearings fit under the (741,742,489) case bearing caps. Can anyone verify for sure?

FYI, I could not get suregrip to fit 741 case.

I have had a 742 ring & pinion installed in a 741 case. If there was work that was done to make it fit, I don't know about it. It's been8yrs now. No problems.
