is there a "best" flex fan choice?
Are there any brands to stay away from? I need a fan that pulls a lot of air, especially at low speeds. Those plastic Derale fans look really affordable, but I wonder if they save as much horsepower as a flex fan. Has anybody run a 19" fan in the stock 383 22" radiator (mine is in a 1970 Charger)?

Why not put a factory flex fan on? My mopar unit looks like twice the quality as the aftermarket junk, really nice curve on the blades too

Speaking from experience here, I wouldn't use a flex fan. I have one on my dart and I hate it. It is noisy at ilde and when you are up to speed on the highway the fan flattens and you get no air being pulled by the fan. The way to go is with the clutch fan.

Clutch fan rules
Right on, Dart. I just read an article not too long ago in one of the Mopar mags. where they did a comparison between flex fans, electric fans, and the Mopar viscuis fan. (thory if'n thet's spaleded ronng).
Guess what came out on top? The Mopar clutch fan! It pulled the most air, was the quietest, and used the least amount of horsepower. Nuff said. It's not nice to mess with Mother Mopar! Joe |

RIGHT ON MoJoe. I have the MOPAR vuscous fan p/n4120758 on my 340. It's great.
As you say, it takes the least horsepower -15 h.p. gain, cools great, and is quiet. Mopar to ya, |

But I just took off my MP clutch fan because it is positioned almost right up against the radiator..... It didn't feel like it was pulling much air through either...... Maybe I should try a different brand of clutch fan?

The clutch on the clutch fan goes bad after awhile. Replace it and then let us know how well it works. Also, you want the fan to be 1" from the radiator for it work correctly.
A shroud is also a must. If you are basically stock with the fan setup you should be able to buy a good shroud or use a universal one from Summit or Jegs. |

Thanks, I will do that (replace the clutch). Let you know how it comes out next weekend (hopefully).
ps I do have a new, factory shroud on the car |

To tell if the clutch is bad it will usually be leaking some thick oil from the center of it or it freewheels when cold. It should give some resistance. I am a firm believer in clutch with a factory A/C fan. My setup with the hood open blows what little hair I have left while standing at the driver door.

Actually, I am pretty certain that my MP clutch fan works fine, I was just going to replace it with one with a shorter output shaft, since it places the fan 1/4" from the radiator.

There appear to be different offsets on the clutch fans. My original clutch puts the fan 3/4 of an inch further away from the radiator than the MP unit. That 3/4 inch makes the old original work much better than the MP when used with a shroud, as it puts the fan only about 3/8 inch into the shroud. The fan location appears to be worth about 10 degrees at idle.
