Default Timing my 340

I went check the timing on the 340 after changing the distributer and I found the timing was sitting around 3 holes on the harmonic balancer. There was an undercut mark that I would have taken to be the timing mark this wasn't anywhere near the timing for the engine.
I set the timing on the middle hole at about 8 degs. before tdc.
What is timing mark on the balancer?

sounds like you have installed the dist. 180 deg off.
did you pull out the dist. drive gear if you did there is a procdure to reinstall it.
there should be a cross mark from front to back on the harm. balencer that is about 1/16 wide and deep. that is the timing mark

There is also a chance you have a damper from another year. Mopar switched from driver to passenger lower radiator hose water pump and had to move marks 90 degrees so you could see them. Try timing from the number 2 spark plug or number 8 (depending on pump/balancer combo) sounds wrong, but the mark might be right on the money. If so, you have a mismatched balancer/pump combo. Remark and time accordingly.
