727 Torqueflite Leak
I have a 727 Torqueflite that's leaking around the seal where the kickdown and shift linkage hooks up.
My questions is, can I replace this seal without dropping the pan and valve body? Thanks, Keith |

Yes you can. Trouble is you have to be able to reach it to be able to pry the old one out and drive the new one in. You may even want to hole saw a 2 inch hole into your floorboard and have an access hole for this, then you can buy a 2" plastic/rubber plug and seal it after you do the R&R on the gasket. I got the seal for a buck at a transmission parts only shop.

I've been looking at some diagrams and you actually have two seals? One around the outside shaft, and one between the two shafts?
I guess I'll have to get the linkage off both shafts to see where the leak is coming from. Thanks, Keith |

Manual Lever Shaft Seal
I replaced the manual lever shaft seal in my '73 Cuda and it wasn't very difficult. I dropped the pan and the valve body (because I didn't want to damage the shaft) so that I could knock the seal out from the bottom. I used an old 15/16"" socket to hammer it back it in.
The service manual says that it can be done without removing the valve body but I'd rather be safe than sorry. |

Drop the pan! It only takes a couple of hours to do the whole job. Put a shift kit in while you at it. That will take longer but hey, that's why you have cars anyway!

Uh-oh!
If it's leaking after the car is parked, that's a sure sign that the front pump bushing is loose. It lets the oil siphon back out of the converter and overfill the pan.

What if it leaks while running AND while parked?
I assume having a front pump bushing loose is bad? :-) What does it require to fix that problem? THANKS!!! Keith |

Take the VB out and knock the seal out from the bottom, then use a couple of large washers and a nut and bolt to press the seal back into place.
As far as the pump bushing, TF's like to eat up the pump bushing, seal and even the converter neck all due to having no cooler flow in park which also means no converter feed (that is where the cooler oil comes from). The TransGo Shift Kit includes a redesigned manual valve and mods that fix this problem but it doesn't fix the wear already there. Make sure that you use a tight fitting pump bushing that matches the hardness of the converter neck. Most are better of with babbit since many replacement necks aren't as hard as the original, which takes a bronze bushing. |

Pulled the pan and valve body out and replaced the seal with no problems...other than the red "Niagra Falls" that always seems to occur!!!!
Thanks for everybody's help!!! Cya, Keith |
