TA 9.5" J converter?
I have a line on a TA 9.5" J converter.
Part number is 17909J. It's used, with about 30 runs on it. I know these have fallen out of favor for the newer 8" converters, but for a long time they were "the $#it", and everybody ran one. Supposedly it has a steeel stator, anti-ballon plates, nitrous compatable, etc etc. S'posed to have all the good stuff. Questions: - The guy wants $500. Good price? -What did they go for new? I seem to remember $700-$800, but that was without the steel stator, etc. It's been over 10 years since I worked in a speed shop and I can't remember much other than that. The seller says he had 1k or so into it, does that sound about right? -Ballpark stall behind a 440/3600lb car? I'm expecting about 5 grand, does that sound reasonable? -I've also been told they are plenty streetable(provided a huge trans cooler is used). True? If you've ever ran one, or even have an old Turbo Action catalog laying around you can quote specs from, I'd sure appreciate your input. Should I, or shouldn't I? ~Z~ |

My brother-in-law runs one in his 383 74 Duster. I think he can foot brake it to over 3000. He has run a 1.58 60ft time and a 11.69 @ 114 with it. And the best part is he bought it from a guy on Moparts for $250 and it works great. I am pretty sure it has the same part number.

with a decent bracket 440, in the 550-600hp range you should see 5100-5300 stall.
good converter for a low 11sec to high 10sec 2800-3500lb car. a new 9" TA converter is about 1K from Mancini. if it really only has 30 runs on it, and the guy will stand behind it, id say $500 is a good price. if he wont at least guarantee that it works as its supposed to, then i would either try to get it for $350ish and send it back to TA and have it checked out, or simply pass on it. for $500 it has to be in good, usable(as is), working condition. |

I run a 69j in both my cars , one runs 9.60s@139.. 60 foot of 1.34 foot braking..... it stalls 4800....the other is an 11.0s car and sees street duty all the time.... I think it's the best convertor i have ever run...big or small block it works great.... if you can pick it up for 500.00 get it !! paul at turbo action has a hard time finding ford cortina cores to build them anymore, last time i called him he was out of cores...Lee.

OK, thanks for the advice. I think I'll probably pick it up, seems like it's a prety decent deal and it'd probably work pretty well.
'preciate it! If anyone else would care to add anything, please do. |
