Question

Has anyone out there in the V8 Mopar world used EGT in order to dial in their carb fed V8? Friends of mine in the Turbo Buick world use it and say that it helps them more than a O2 sensor. The TB guys say that a good range is around 1600 degrees for their cars, but would the same range apply to a V8?

Arthur

* * There are several points that I'd like to bring up on this subject, but before going into a long post, I'd like to see what kind of responce there is.

We use an EGT to tune ours. 1600 is a little high. We normally run in the 1300's.

My question is, who has EGT's and how much will they run me? Where is a good location in the pipe? The collectors?

The EGT thermocouple shoud be located as close to the port header flage as possible. Ideally you would have one EGT probe for each port. In any case - there are several mfgs of these devices for racing. Take a look in the advert section of NHRAs National Dragster to see whats available. I think TAG systems in Phoenix sells them.

I beleive the turbo engines egt will be higher because of the back pressure created by the turbo. A normally aspirated engine burning gasoline will likely run best @ 1250 -1300 degrees. There is no exact magic number for any and all engines though, just a general range.

1050 t 1200 alky, 1300 to 1450 gasoline. Ambient has an effect on final temp. The calculation is part of most et prediction software. I'll see if I can find it and post it. My friend has the Computech brand and has it on the #1 tube near the flange.

The MoPar FWD turbo crowd tunes for 1200-1300 degrees, above about 1500 degrees the pistons start to fail, if they are uncoated. This is using gasoline as a fuel.

Don't know what those Buick clowns are doing but 1600 is too high for a cast piston engine, imho.

You have to be careful tuning strickly by EGTs, there is no "magic" number. I have seen engines burn pistons at 1200 and other engines run great at 1700. EGTs are a great tool but don't forget about the old school tuning tricks, reading plugs and vacumn signals.
If you have one cylinder that always seems to be leaner than the rest, that would be the cylinder to install the thermocouple.
