Question 318 Dodge Check Valve

I ran across something I haven't seen before the other day. It is a check valve out of an early 318 motor (not a Y block). It was located under the rear main cap running straight up. I made a few calls and was told that is an oil check valve that was used in some 318's with solid cam's and adjustable rockers. Can someone confirm this?

The one I have is toast. Anyone have an idea on where to find a replacement??

Thanks!!

Richard

Here is a quote from Mopar Engines, 9th Edition

Quote:
All the 'A' engines use a special plug in the back of the block. If it isn't in place then the engine will have very low oil pressure. With a new block, or an unknown used block, be sure to check the oil passage to the oil filter (a drilled hole at the side of the block). The output oil to the filter and the return oil from the filter are separated from each other by a pressed-in plug. Be sure this plug is pressed into the pre-driled hole until it bottoms solidly. Note: If the block is stress-relieved (read: used) this plug should be replaced.
MPP sells the complete engine hardware kit, which I believe will still have this in it. P5249261.

So yes, you are right about this. It actually was even in the 'A' engines with hydraulic lifters as well.

And here's a tip. Don't be stupid like me. I tried to poke a hole through it and pull it out the bottom. It can be knocked out by a long thin bolt/rod straight down through the hole where the oil pressure sending unit goes.

Question

That plug isn't a check valve.

Technically, true. It's not a valve at all, it's just a plug..

At least that's what I figure given the description of its location.
