2001 4x4 quad w/ 17" rims ?
My truck has 17" wheels, factory. I am looking for a liitle height. the next available size is 35's. they get 1.5 wider. I have been told they will not fit my rim or under my truck w/o a lift. I do not want to lift it. 2001 came with a factory lift. Nothing is available for 17 inch rims. I see some postings where ther are 16 wheels on 2001's, will theese wheels fit my truck? I sam thimking about a 285/75 r16... any suggestions?

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 truck. Ordered in 10/00 and recieved in 11/00. It was ordered with the T&H package. The tire size is 265/60/16 which has a diameter of about 31.5". From the many forums I visit, the max size people have put on without rubbing is 265/65/16 which is about a 32" diameter with the same width. Some people sometimes experience rubbing at maximun turning with this size though, but not all. Your truck came with a factory lift? Like to hear more about it. Never heard of a lift for 2001 models. If I was in your position, get a hold of a set of 15" or 16" rims and go to a helpful tire place and try different size tires to find ones which will clear the body and not rub at full turn. Mabe a local 4x4 shop could help you also. good luck, Bob |

Bob, the 2000 and 2001 Off roadsters come with a 2" factory lift which is due to having heavier springs in the front and an extra leaf in the rear. They also put 17" rims on these trucks with 275/70r17 tires.
The only thing I have found on the market to fit the 17" rims are 265/75r17's which is what Ford is putting on thier trucks. They are lower profile but wider. From what I can see, your sugestion to go too a 16" rim and then go with larger tires is our only option. |

Thanx for the reply
And 16" wheels is what I did. Got on E-bay and found myself a set of oem 16" wheels. I am looking towards a 290/75 or 70 r16
I think the 70 is about an exact fit. the 75 is 3/4 taller amd 1 " wider... Did the tire comparison site and there is only a little difference. not much savings on the rpm's and I am thinking I dont want to lose my 4:10 gear. Now actuaoy thinking about going a little smaller. That would increase my gear ratio...decisions decisions....Well at least I got the rims so no matter what I decide I am that far.. May get another set of rims and try it both ways...Gonna do the dyno first with all factory equip. before I start adding my upgrades... |

Hey great. Keep us updated on how this works out for you. I'll be probably doing the same thing next spring.

smaller rims are better in alot of ways. for one, they LOOK a helluva lot better when you hav meaty tires. for another, you won't damage the rim as easy if you ever take it offroad

kwikfish,
Thank you for sharing the information on the off roadsters. I have not heard of them before. Sounds cool to me. I wish it was an option when I got the 2001 Quad Cab. lilbegeep, Glad to hear your project is coming along. Please keep us updated to your progress. I suggested 16" rims due to the greater availability of tire choice. I suppose there is even a greater variety with 15" rims. It is your choice as to what looks better to you. Mopar_nutz, I agree that large tires on smaller rims look meaty and they protect the rim from potholes and dents. They may be kinda hazardous if a blowout happens on the highway, as there would be a significant drop of the vechicle if this happens, and I would assume the flat tire would present a significant drag if it were a front tire blowout. This condition may try to rip the steering wheel out of one's hands. The larger sidewall height will present more sidewall deflection when turning and give a squirrly feeling. I have a friend who has a 85 Chevy Blazer 2 door, with 15" rims and 33 x 12 tires on it. It is a bit of a challenge to drive it not only on the highway but through turns as well. I found that due to the short wheel base of this truck that it tends to wander on the highway giving it this squirrly feeling. It is a heck of an offroader though. In the future, I would like to get a lift for the 2001 Quad Cab, whenever they come out, and would like to get 33" diameter tires on it, if it will fit. This project is in the far future. Being currently unemployed, a project of this expense is not feasable at this time. I can dream about though, right? |

Bob, Dream all you want...Thats where ideas are born.
BTW, The Offroad package is an option for the 2001 Quad cabs. Thats what mine is. I have heard of guys changing th springs on the standard quad cabs. Just a thought. Oh, and I totally agree with the principal of having more tire and less rim. Just makes sence to me....as long as you dont go overboard. |

kwikfish,
I ordered my Quad in 10/00 and recieved in 11/00. This option was not available on the Quads to my knowledge. Was it for 4x4's? Do you know for sure when it was? I like your quote: Dream all you want...Thats where ideas are born. If I were the top engineer for Mopar, there would not be so many drawbacks in the dakota. Tow hooks for instance on 2001 models. It would have a diesel engine, real 4x4 (all wheels pull), at least 33"tires, and would have to be able to pull out a tree stump. Keep in touch, Bob |

LOL!! I just noticed your truck is a Dakota. I was refering to the 1500 Ram Quad cabs in my posts, which is what I believe lilbegeep was also asking about.
No I dont think they have the same package available for the Dakota's. "I like your quote" Thanks!! Not bad for off the cuff, eh? |

Wheels and tires update !!
I scored BIG !! Got me a set of Get this, Factory OEM 16" wheels Five spoke/star with Ram head. They came off a 2000 1500. Four wheeler from Texas had them on E-bay I got all four for....Drum Roll!!! ......A whopping $102.50, shipping to fla from Texas was 36.00, I paid an even 140.00 (big spender). I couldn't believe it! There was no picture associated but the info was all correct and how wrong could I be for that price? I received them on Aug. 29 ( my birthday) to awesome !! I held my breath as I opened the boxes... No scratches no dents, probably in better shape than my 17"'s. I screamed !!! gonna wrap them in 295/75's
... Reply to previous replys: I considered the 33" route. They are out for the 17" wheels, along with the 35's and 37's. Doing the math, the 33's are within a 1/4 inch of the stock 17" 275/70 r17's. I spoke with a couple of dealers and the tires( 275's) are a little taller than the math says they are. All the 33's, 35's...etc... are 12.50 " wide. (The stock 275's are 10.82 " wide; Lets say 11" ). But it wasnt recommended going 12.50 on the17x8 rim. The 295/75 r16 are 1" taller and 3/4 inch wider. I am mainly going for the fuller wheel well look. A little height with minimal width is perfect. The gear will go to around a 398 (cam will take care of that little difference) and that little bit of width should eliminate the spin on take off. I figure i spin a revolution or two. But know I have the availability of tires. I pull a hobie cat (not that I can feel it back there), but the beaches here in fla can be tricky. When I say that the 33's and 35's will fit under a stock setup, I am going on the calculations, not experience. But I also, as from previous replys, have the 2" lift... 4x4 shops said they wouldnt fit, but they all wanted to sell me a suspension lift $1000 or a body lift $500.. I thought about lowering with a pair of 265/70 r16. that would give an awesome gear ratio. I think it was around 436-450. I played with so many sizes I cant remember. I am gonna find another set of 16's and try a slightly smaller than stock size to see how that feels. There are alot of great deals on ebay ! Another reason for the switch, prices for 17" tires started at $275 each tire. I am getting a great set of oem wheels and new tires for around $600... It is going to be a while before 17" tires are there, quite a while...The mods are starting to arrive so I will be spending some time under the hood and on the Dyno. |

What a deal!!
I started to look though ebay a week ago too, but AI have'nt seen anything near the price you paid yet. You'll have to post us a pic of them on your ram. "The 295/75 r16 are 1" taller and 3/4 inch wider" Hmm, I wasnt thinking they are that much taller. The width sounds about right though. They should fit uder your truck just fine though. I have the same set-up as you and I know how much extra space we have around them stock tires. Keep us posted. I really want to hear how his all works out. |

17" wheels
Thanks for the offer, but I am going to hold onto the 17" wheels. It may be some time but I think with the increased demand for larger tires, the selection of tire sizes will eventualy be there.
