i took the holley carb off my truck and put it on my dart-except i can't get it running good! I herd a old hot-rodder say turn all the screws in and then back them off 1 1/2 turns to start as a baseline!? Is this good? if not does anyone else have any suggestions!??? Also the reason i threw the carb on was because of the carb that was on the dart didn't have secondarys-and it was acting up bad yesterday like when i took in on the by-pass it was backfiring at 3,000rpms! PLEASE I WANNA HAVE THIS CARB SET_UP ASAP!!!!!!THANKS!!!!!!

Are you sure the carb was the culprit for the backfiring. My 79 318 did the same thing and it turned out to be a combination of a bent valve and a wiped cam lobe. You might want to check this out first. If the carb worked well on the truck and you put it on the car with no adjustments then it is probably a problem elsewhere. cruzerjd

I'm pretty sure its not a bent valve or cam lobe! Please i need to set-up the carb! Another reason i think its the carb is because the car has a bad vibration till bout 2,800rpms! So i wanna try the carb and see what happens! If anyone also has a good running 318 please contact me!!!!

If its backfireing at 3000. It is more likely to be lean. If its the carb.

Yes the old carb was back firingso i took it off and now when i fire it up theres a big flame that shoots up through the air cleaner. I'm guessing that there;s too much fuel!!????RIGHT????
So anyway a old hotrodder told me that turn all the screws in then turn them out 1 1/2 turns to start at a baseline, but wouldn't you think tooo much fuel=====FIRE!!!

A standoff fire, (big fire belch) usually means the Timing is 180 off, ie. the spark is happening on the intake stroke. Check your ignition timing first, and yes, 1.5 turns out is the recommended starting point on the mixture screws.

You might have two different plug wires crossed. I had this the other day had 1&3 crossed still ran but would backfire. Check and double check your plug wires and timing.

does sound like youve got plug wires mixed up.might check for broken rocker arm or little movement of pushrod on offending cylinder. have you isolated which cylinder is missfiring?I had the same happen to my 80 hp360 and it was broken cam lobe and broken rocker.remember when holleys get backfired through, they usually blow power valves so be on the lookout for that after you isolate your miss.good luck

Plug wires are fine. It did run before w/ the old carb and thats when it started backfiring. so i decieded to throw a new carb on, thats when it started shooting flames up the carb, the timing is 5 degrees BTDC

Yoe've most likely got a blown powervalve in the new carb, caused by it blowing fire up the throat.

Check your plug wires and make sure that they are correct. It only takes a minute. It wouldn't be the first time that somebody has opened the hood of a car and swapped a couple of wires and closed the hood.

That happened to me once. I was stupid and didn't have my air cleaner on the engine. I started the engine and she had what sounded like a big sneeze. She ran bad and then I saw the smoke coming from under the hood and the paint begin to bubble on the hood. I opened the hood and saw the large flames on the carb. Put 'em out with a big clean rag. After inspecting everything I found two plug wires swapped. From that day forward, I put chains and a lock (all hidden on the inside) on my hoods.

The same thing happened to another one of my MOPAR buddies. All we were able to find out is that was most likely a somebody that was jealous of our MOPARs (You know how those Chevy and Ford lovers can be).

The vibration that you have is not caused by the carb. That is most likely something out of balance in the drive train.

Just a note...some 4160 carbs have a reverse
idle adjustment, where you screw it in to richen and out to lean.
Although it sounds like a timing problem to me too.
