Good Buy on a 71 cuda?
Here's the sale:
71 barracuda , original 318 car, rally hood, dual cuttout vallance include, ralley hood, a/c, pwr steering, pwr brakes, bucket seat interior, everything intact (supposedly) , 8 3/4 with 355 posi, No engine currently in the car, no tranny, but comes with a 440, A-833 tranny, and a 727 tranny, plus the tunnel, pedals, pistolgrip shifter and all linkage (again supposedly) to complete the changover to the 4 speed A-833. What do you think? How easily can I retrofit the 4 speed and 440 in this a body car? Im not too new to mopars but I need some help on this to see if I should try such a feat. Could I just throw in a 727/440 combo? Asking price is 3750 obo. Thanks!! |

Sounds a liitle pricy, but then again, I can't see it. To make the swap, you'll have to have some skills in them there hands of yours. Farming out some of the work?
The auto would be easy. You'll need to get a kit from Schmacher, creative services, AKA engine swaps simplified. Look in a mopar mag for an advetisment. Then you'll need to have a driveshaft made up. The 4spd needs a lot of little things. Example; Z-bar needs a spot on the frame to mount into a bracket thats welded on the frame. Do you have the bracket? Do your homework!!!! Only you can decide. |

what condition are the body and motor in?..
if the motor is not fresh, then its worth nothing. If the body is trashed, you'll have to spend 4 grand to get it right. my 73 340 at least ran when i bought it, tho it was rough all over. cost 3750.. |

First, a 1971 Barracuda is an "E" body, not an "A" body. What this means is that many "B" body parts will interchange with the "E" body.
Around here 1971 Baracudas are getting expensive! If it has a good straight, rust free body with all the trim, the body alone may be worth the price. I know the '71 fenders and grills are selling for very high prices. Putting the 440 with 727 in the car would be pretty easy, you just need "B" body or "E" body big block engine mounts and the rubber motor insulators. You may need a larger radiator, a different length driveshaft, and larger torsen bars for the heavier engine. You also need an exhaust system. For the 4-speed, on top of the above, you will need the underdash brake/clutch pedal setup, all the clutch linkage, Z-bar and pivots (one needs to be bolted to the drivers side frame), plus the shifter and shifter linkage, and depending on if the transmission has a bell housing and clutch/flywheel, etc. |

Hey Chris,
I'm not trying to dissuade you but I have to agree with the Rumblefish. It does seem pricey to me too. One thing for sure, you are not getting the bargain of the year. The way I see it is you are basically buying a 318 roller, & paying him very well for his extra parts! To put it in perspective, figure what you would pay for the roller, then figure what you would pay for the extra parts i.e. engine, 727, 833 etc. I don't think it will add up to $3750. The 727 is a dime a dozen, the 833 cost bucks, & like mtrv8n said, the 440 is worth nothing if not fresh. Decide wisely unless you have money to burn. |

It does sound a bit expensive for a basket case.
What condition is the car in? I think a really nice '71 grill is getting $700+, and really nice fenders may get $300 each with the gill inserts? The hoods are being reproduced, so it may only be worth a few hundred also, and this is if the parts are in nice condition, it they are rusty or banged up, you may want to consider the cost of finding good replacement parts, which would make the car worth even less. It sounds like by the time you get the car all put together you may have $8,000+ into it (it's the small stuff that kills the budget.) You may be able to find another complete running car for $8,000 to $10,000 considering the car you are looking at buying is a 318 Barracuda, not a 'Cuda with a 340 or other HP engine. |

yeah i know it's an E body, not A, my mistake.
Im not looking for a screaming deal here. I know you don't see these cars in good intact grilles and soforth on the side of the road often. I just happen to believe the 71 cuda was the greatest looking mopar built to date. As for the extra parts, i could always use the extra block + tranny's. This is pretty much a mopar I would only dream about owning. This could be something I would drop a hemi into in the future when I could afford it. Im not afraid of dropping $20,000 into it. I dropped 13 g's into my 73 sattelite 400/727 and I think it was worth every penny, to bad I cant enjoy it for another winter ( ran into by some white dude with a mullet, hit and run ) but I'll be getting enough and more to buy another project car from my insurance and I would kill for a cuda. Im going to take a look at it tommorrow I'll let you guys know |
