Cool

are the heads on my 86 318 4 bbl motor the same as the earlier model heads(late 60"s and early 70"s) that the 318"s had or are they of the newer design (swirl port) ? This engine is in a x-police fury and came with a double roller timing chain and windage tray and thermoquad carb which are all origional.I dont have current access to casting numbers at this time.

According to the Mopar Engine Book, the "good" heads are the '302' casting, from 87-91, and the '308' casting, from 88-92.

The MP book also mentions a "high performance" 318 head presumably used on the police package. Hi-swirl or not you can make them flow very well--need to know casting number, determine valve size, etc. 72 Challenger: Let me be the first to welcome you to our site!! You will find alot of good advice, helpful hints and friendly folks. We all learn from each other. Look forward to more posts from you!

The 318 4-bbl heads and intake was straight out of a 360. So, they are just regular 360 big port heads with 1.88 / 1.60, no highswirls or whatsoever.

1.78 intake 1.50 exhaust is what the mopar perf cat. says are the specs for the hp 318 head. I found it on the link to the catalog at the top of the web page.I hope they're not what I really have and if so its back to square 1.RATS! time to pull the covers off again.

MP catalog? I thinkk they sell the late 80's high swirl heads as hp castings, and they do have the smaller ports and the smaller valves. I think they were used in rollercam TBI engines, and the 4 bbl 318's had the 360 heads.
