Head gasket Leaks and other prob
I'm sort of looking at a late model 5 speed Neon to rice up. I was surprised how fun it was to drive, up till now i always thought a 318 would be the smallest engine i'd use. I have heard though that the neon has head gasket problems (among others). Anything else major to keep an eye out for.

Nothing major other than the headgasket. Go to Neons.org for all your questions. I have had my Neon for almost 2 years and I beat the crap out of it. Still runs like a champ except I have torn side mounts. But the Neon is a good car.

As long as you have the later MLS headgasket you'll be fine.

Mine is a 96 SOHC 5-speed, and I don't have the headgasket problem. Not all cars were affected. The only problems I've had were minor electrical, the rear defrost switch, the instrument cluster going dead, simple enough repairs. The car has 92,000 K miles now and still has the original brakesand runs great. It's been a super little car. I've been anal about keeping up with the routine maint. though, but no serious problems.
