Question 273 D-Dart?

I am looking for the 275hp. 273 D-Dart specs. Anyone have them?? I have a 273 now in a '66 Belvedere that I just rebuilt not too long ago and am looking for a little more. I know that another smallblock of larger cubes would be choice, but right now I am stickng with the 273 as it is together, fresh and runs!! Besides, no place to tear apart a car while in school and living in an apartment! Can replace heads and cam in the parking lot, but that is about it! Thanks for any input!

Default D Dart

I know the D Darts had aluminum front ends, Doug Thorley headers on all the ones I saw, a factory solid lifter cam(which was usually replaced by a Racer Brown stick) and either 12 to 1 or 12 1/2 to one pistons, heads were standard 235 horse pieces, and the class allowed port matching, but not porting. Most of the horsepower came from compression and cam. They were not streetable, even then. They also used a one-off Carter AFB, if I recall correctly, and the factory 235 HP, single plane manifold.
These memories come from the mind of Doug...who was there.

D-Darts were made only in '66. The package consisted of a 273 hp engine that was freshened with a bigger, slightöy under .5" lift mech cam. a Holley carb, (a high rise intake?) and Doug Thorley headers (still available but VERY expensive). The short block was stock 11:1 235 hp 273. Those pistons are not available as far as I know, unless you have a custom set made. I believe the cars were all 2 D posts, ahd a four sped manual and a 8 3/4" with 4.56 gears. I think that none authentic car has survived

Default D Dart

i'm sure the 235 HP were 11 to 1 and the D Darts were 12 or 12 1/2 to one. I helped my (ex)brother-in-law put D Dart slugs in his 235 HP Barracuda...in 1966.

dart66gt is right, i just looked into my direct connection bible and he was right. the cam was a solid lifter .510 lift with a holley carb, 11.0:1's and a 4 speed, would have been a wild little machine. my brother had the chance years ago to buy one but the motor had spun a bearing it was only , get this $900 but he was only in high school at the time so he couldn't afford it. that was back in 1983, we have tried to track the car down but we heard it ended up in a scrap yard then to the crusher too bad it would have been a cool car.

I believe they had a slighly over .500 lift solid cam made by Cam Craft, and a holley carb adapted to the stock single plane intake.
Not very streetable and I'm sure could take alot of RPM's.

Thanks to those who answered! Now I have a better idea of where I want to build this thing to. Looks like time to shave the heads, port/polish them and install a cam and a new aluminum intake made for 273's from Offenhauser. And a convertor and gears.

The heads in the D-Dart were stock production 273 heads. Duplicating the packeage would be pretty expensive mainly because of the piston availability. Building a 273 for performance isn't very popular; it's pretty small in displacement and the bore is so small that it hurts the head flow. Even a 318, or rather a 340 or 360 with their bigger valve/port heads would be a way better starting point for a streetable D-Dart clone. There are not many people who can tell the difference between a 360 or a 273 with the engine in the engine compartment.

Cool

Yes I realize a larger displcaement small block would be the answer, but as I have said, this 273 is together and running and just getting broke in now. It is an ariginal 273 hp with the closed chamber heads and all that, now I will do a little work to it and see how fast it will go. Besides, it would be interesting to see how fast I can make this little engine go in my Belvedere. When I do decide to build a smallblock it will be a 416!!
