I just heard from a friend that a company has come up with a tail shaft attachment that would turn your 727 into a 6 speed auto? Is this true? If so are there any cost projections yet? Is it a strong piece, can it handle horsepower? It sounds interesting to me, but I'd like to see some more data if anybody has some.

There's an overdrive unit that bolts in place of the original tailshaft. Of course it is longer so the driveshaft has to be shortened but other than that it seemed to be a really good idea. The company that makes them is called Gear Vendors and they even do the whole install if you want, or it comes with directions to do it yourself in the driveway. MoparMuscle magazine did a tech article on the install in a 1971 440 Charger, it was a couple of months back.

The only thing about the gear vendors unit is the $2,500 price tag. It is made to handle tons of torque. It is a nice setup though. Although I still would rather have a 5 or 6-speed manual with a .65 Overdrive in it.

Supposedly the gear vendors units have, or were supposed to, become stock pieces on ford f350 4x4's. You might check this out and look for somebody who just totaled one or check late model salvage yards. This information came from an article in either hot rod or car craft sometime last year. I haven't really looked into it much yet, but the projected price of an adapter was around $400 and they said you might be able to pick up the gear vendors unit for about the same price. Then all you have to do it shorten the drive shaft. I'll see if I can find the article and give some more info.

Cool

I have a 78 Powerwagon with a 2bbl 360 and a 727 transmission. It gets only about 10mpg on the highway, and 6 around town (full-time 4wd). This overdrive unit would be great, because then I might get a little better mileage. Keep the info coming. By the way, I am new to this site, and it is really cool how everyone helps each other out-it's like a big family. Thanks again-powerwagon

Biggrin

Hey, I found the web address for Gear Vendors if anyone is interested. I was a little confused as to how the system is supposed to opperate once installed, but I asked for one of their free brochure, so that may help out a little. The address is as follows: http://www.drivetrain.com/overdrive.html

thanks springfeet for listing the name of this dealer.

will the older transfercase bolt to the A518 OD tranny? if so some mods to the tranny x-member and driveshaft and a salvage yard A518 would get you 1 OD gear..for probably less than $1000

Sorry about falsely stating that drivetrain specialists was gear vendors. Gear Vendors site is simply Http://www.gearvendors. com
