Speedometer troubles
I've got a 1966 Fury and the speedometer swings wildly while going down the road. The odometer is working correctly so I assume the cable is OK?
Is there anything a "shade tree mechanic" can do to a speedometer to fix/help this problem? Thanks, Keith |

If you open up the speedo, you will find what looks like a bell. That bell is probably slightly warped. Just bend it back into shape and it should be fine.
My '68 Charger did that, when I bought it. That is what I did to fix it. |

You may also want to look at the cable. It may need lubrication. It could be winding up in the casing then letting go creating the swing. Or the gear in the trans has a few teeth missing and it's catching just enough to make your odometer move. I would focus on lubing the cable with spedo cable lube and inspecting the cable for kinks while it's out.

My problem was with the small bushing that the spindle from the "bell" rides in. It was worn badly.
I was able to make one using a wire welder tip with a .035" hole. I turned it down to the correct OD, then ground it down to the right height and used epoxy to hold it in place after I carefully drilled out the old bushing. Works great now. Cya, Keith |
