Question Clunk

For almost a year know when my Durango hits a bump in the road or any rough terrain ,it clunks in the front end.
I wrecked the D almost 2 years ago. I'm thinking that might have something to do with it of course.

If anybody could give me some ideas of what it might be I would greatly appreicate.

P.S. If I had to guess I would say it is the tray that holds up the battery bumping up against something. But thats just a guess.

THANKS,WILL

Question

Universal joints (4WD)? Does your battery not have tie-downs?

Yes, the battery does have the tie downs.

Where are the ball joints at?
How can I test them & see if they need to be replaced?

THANKS,WILL

One ball joint per control arm (two for each front tire).

To test them, you need a dial gauge and jack. Lift the D so the tire is off the ground. Us a jack stand to keep it there. Then put the jack under the torsion bar and put the load on the jack (lift the tire using the torsion bar). The using the gauge there should be no more than .060" movement/play when rocking the tire. If there is at least one of the two ball joints is bad on that side.

It's best to talk it to a dealer have them test it, but make sure they know what they are doing, most of the people I've talked to didn't realize they needed to talk the load off the control arm buy using a jack. If you have the FSM, there is a complete diag procedure for doing this.

John.
