I'm not familar with that carter #. I have used a mechanical Holley pump on a 318, with an aftermarket double roller timing chain. Don't really see why a double row chain would make a difference with any mech. pump.

I run the Carter 6270 mechanical pump on my 340 Dart Sport strip car and I use a Cloyes dual roller chain with no problems at all.

The reason they don’t recommend it is that some double chain sets stick out to far and would interfere with the lever that runs on the roller on the end of the camshaft. I remember years ago on a friend’s 350 chev engine, we put it all back together after a double chain was installed and when we fired it up it made a huge grinding noise coming from the water pump. It lasted about 1 minute and then seemed to lessen somewhat and within about 3 minutes it was gone. We also installed a cam at the same time and so we thought it was the cam breaking in that the grinding was all about. 8 months later he was at a friends house and the car wouldn’t start, took off the fuel line and no fuel was coming out. I towed him home and the next morning when he took out the fuel pump to get another one the lever was chewed away so much that it eventually broke and wouldn’t actuate on the roller inside. After this he installed an electric fuel pump and everything was fine again except it took him forever fishing the broken end of the lever out of the eng

My 360 has a cloyes double roller timming chain and the Carter HV Fuel pump (not sure of the number, but it is the HV street pump that Summit sells.) Anyhow, there is no clearance problems with it. I even put a Mopar Moly fuel pump eccentric on the cam.

Must be a Chevy catalogue. Last time I put a small block together ther is alot of clearance between the double roller chain and the cam eccentric.

Cool

I ordered the street pump from Federal Mogul , and there were no warnings about the doubl roller chains, just in the Carter catalogue had the warnings. Once again thanks to everyone for their advice. Toddd.

Whats wrong with an electric? I recently switched over using a 6lb. unit from Napa for $29.99 and a $5.99 block off plate from Kragen. Any BB Chivvy block off plate will fit a Mopar. $37- $38 and I was done in about 20 minutes. works well for me> Are you daily or track?

This is for our street/occasional strip car. I took the car to some 1/4 mile drags here a while ago and it ran like a sack of crap. I'm trying to solve the problem systematically. the pump that we put on the motor (380/360 crate motor) was off our old 273. We were running out of money by the time the swap was completed, so we negleted to change the pump because the car ran ok. I have since then put TTI headers on it and took it to the track and running with out mufflers it ran like a sack of crap. With mufflers it ran "OK" but you could feel the motor stop pulling and start to crap out. I have been offered an electric pump so it is still an option. Toddd

I have ran the Carter "Hemi" volume pump with a Cloyes True Roller timing chain for years without a problem. I just looked in my motor (on a stand) without the pump on it and there is more than enough clearance for the pump arm.

Toddd I had the same thing happen to me(360) and it was the timing, when I opened up the exhaust somehow the back pressure allows the timing to change(advance) and it ran like a sack of crap,I had it at 10* initial, with open headers it went to 17*,after resetting it it ran better but then I had to add tork tubes to get it to screamm..............PRO......
