Is it essential to have crank, pistons, balenced?

Can you buy a crank & bolt it in without balaning?

I don't unerstand why you can buy a whole rebuild complete kit. crank, piston, rods, bearings, cam, gasket, from PAW for $620.00

But as soon as you talk 4" crank it is $1833.00

Why the 4" crank is only $300.00 Whats up

The pistons $$$ Are they milling .25 off the top of a KB chevy piston. If so is that good to have the top milled so thin?

I can only speculate on the reason for the large price increase, but parts quality, machine work required and parts availability are the only areas of consideration. My guess is that the kit you mention has upgrades in all these areas, ie custom pistons, mallory in the crank, aftermarket rods etc.

The tops of the pistons are never milled. The compression height is adjusted by moving the pin higher into the piston. The greatest reason for the price increase is the fact that these pistons are custom made. Maybe if enough of us build that small block stroker, the price will come down. I don't know if PAW internally balances their kit, but Hughes Engines does. If they do, that's another reason for the extra $$.

To answer your first question, you must balance the rotating assembly if you don't want your new crank to break.

I plan on building one too, so I'd say yes to the group buy. Wonder what sort of discount we could get? My only problem (besides the house pmt, child support, new wife, etc) is that I'm committed to doing my interior resto and suspension build up first, since the 318 is running pretty strong already. So the current budget puts my engine rebuild about 15 months away.
