Default Buying the right ThermoQuad.

I have seen many posts about "poor performance" from T.Q.'S:

inability to get any adjustment from the fuel air mix screws,
black somke from the exhaust at idle,
engine won't idle,
hard starts, hot and cold,
flooding,
leaks; both internal/external.

Alot of these symptoms can be attributed to the fact that many
of these carbs are the 1975 to early1980 models. These carbs
require certain mods to the top plate/base plate/squirter nozzles
and will require the 22 degree taper fuel air mix screws over the
12 degree origionals. Once these areas are addressed, then you will have an excellent performing carb. These mods are necessary because the carbs from 75-80 had "leaner" idle circuits and "off
idle circuits" and basically, no tuneability; combine those factors with the emissions equipment like the altitude compensator,
egr valve/timer delay and the evaporator cannister. So without
the origional intended emissions equipment, ie a cammed up,
hp dual plane or single plane intake, headers etc, the carb is
too lean to even operate a stock 318.

Again, these carbs are excellent carbs for resto, street/strip or
full race purposes if the necessary mods are made. I also have
done some R&D with the idle circuits on the 1972 to 1984 T.Q.'S
and have developed a completely adjustable idle circuit(seperate from the fuel air mix screws) and am pleased to say that these
mods will make the engine exhaust cleaner and more likely to pass emissions testing and will make it possible to use an 850
cfm T.Q. to be used on a mild 318 or an 800 cfm T.Q. on a hopped up slant 6.

Question

Mind sharing the price with us?

Seems like a lot of trouble to go though seeing as though you can buy an Edelbrock 800 (electric or manual choke) that will run perfect out of the box...

...all for about 300 bucks.

if i remeber right its about $25 for a core and $118 for a race rebuild that flows up to 1050 cfm with improved bottom end. im not sure how much the small parts cost would total up to. my guess is $200 for a full boggy thermoquad.

"perfect outta the box" is what ebrock says and that barnum circus guy said "there's a sucker born every minute"
there aint no carb or fuel injection system that ll run "perfect" outta the box. what they mean is good enough. who says there "good enough" standards are even close to your idea of "thats horrible"? sorry if i sounded offensive but just trying to throw some facts out there. i hope to buy a race thermoquad but im confused on the total cost of "small parts" and if i can use a choke and still flow 1000+cfm.

Curious, the street/strip and race carbs do not use a choke;
rejetting/mods to the squirter nozzle fix the need for it. As for the "small parts", I can do the mods to your carb ot the parts or I
can supply the parts(kit) with everything you need, just let me know what your application/engine specs and what performance level you need;


Fast_Eddie, I have tested/tuned the 600 and 750 Edelbrocks
and have found that they almost allways need quite a bit of tweaking ie a rejetting kit. The same can be true for the T.Q.
I ALLWAYS recommend re-jetting/other mods everytime that I
build a T.Q. An 800 Edelbrock will most likely not run on a mild 318 or 360 or even a hopped up 273, but this is where the
T.Q., wether an 800 or an 850 will and also on a hopped up
340-440 engine.
My custom jetted(per your engine specs) will run @$185
complete including a core charge and will flow up to @910 cfm's
and is tested/tuned by me on one of my engines whereas
the Edelbrock is @$280 and will require performance tuneing and probably a re-jetting kit.
